A Day of Sun and Cenotes

Today was a day dedicated to pure, unadulterated fun in the sun! We ventured to Xel-Há Park, a natural aquatic wonderland just a short drive from Playa del Carmen. As a software developer from Montreal, trading my keyboard for a snorkel was exactly the kind of recharge I needed, and the kids were beyond excited. The promise of crystal-clear waters, hidden cenotes, and a buffet of delicious Mexican food? What's not to love!

Our day began, as most do on vacation, with a hearty breakfast. We decided to try El Hongo, a local spot known for its authentic Mexican breakfast dishes. It's always a treat to start the day with something other than the usual hotel fare. Fatoumata ordered some delicious huevos rancheros, while I went for the traditional breakfast burrito. Aminata and Ibrahim enjoyed some tastylicious pancakes. The food was fantastic, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It felt good to support a local business and immerse ourselves in the culture.

Fueled up and ready for adventure, we made our way to Xel-Há. The drive itself was scenic, offering glimpses of the lush Mayan jungle that surrounds Playa del Carmen. Arriving at the park, we were immediately struck by the sheer size of the place. It's not just a water park; it's a sprawling natural ecosystem with a river, cenotes, lagoons, and even a section of the Caribbean Sea all interconnected.

The best kind of therapy is beach therapy.

Our first order of business was to grab our snorkeling gear and hit the water. The main lagoon is teeming with colorful fish, and even for a novice like me, it was easy to spot dozens of different species. Aminata and Ibrahim were in their element, darting around like little torpedoes, pointing out every parrotfish and angelfish they could find. Fatoumata, ever the graceful swimmer, explored the coral formations with a serene smile. I tried my best to keep up, marveling at the underwater world and snapping photos with my waterproof camera.

After working up an appetite snorkeling, we headed to Los Murales for lunch. This restaurant is known for its fine dining and the beautiful murals that adorn its walls. The food was exquisite, a perfect blend of traditional Mexican flavors and modern culinary techniques. I had some grilled fish, while Fatoumata enjoyed a seafood salad. The kids, of course, opted for the quesadillas. We ate outside, enjoying the beautiful views and the warm Caribbean breeze.

The afternoon was spent exploring the rest of the park. We floated down the lazy river on inner tubes, taking in the sights and sounds of the jungle. We climbed the Scenic Lighthouse, which offered breathtaking panoramic views of the park and the coastline. And of course, we couldn't resist the thrill of the zip lines, soaring through the air and splashing into the cool waters below. The kids were particularly fond of the cliff jump, which I, admittedly, chickened out of. Maybe next time!

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Porfirio's Playa del Carmen for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Mexican cuisine and its lively atmosphere. The restaurant was vibrant, with mariachi music and colorful decorations. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

We started with some classic appetizers like esquites and guacamole. For the main course, I tried the cochinita pibil, a slow-roasted pork dish that was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Fatoumata opted for the enchiladas verdes, while the kids enjoyed some chicken tacos. The food was fantastic, and the portions were generous. We washed it all down with some refreshing margaritas and agua frescas.

The evening at Porfirio's was more than just a meal; it was a celebration of Mexican culture. The mariachi band serenaded us with traditional songs, and the staff even brought out a sombrero for me to wear. Aminata and Ibrahim were fascinated by the dancers and the colorful costumes. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Xel-Há is truly a special place. It's not just a tourist attraction; it's a natural wonder that offers something for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned snorkeler or a first-time visitor, you're sure to be amazed by the beauty and diversity of this aquatic paradise. And with its all-inclusive format, you can relax and enjoy the day without worrying about a thing. It was the perfect way to spend a day with my family, creating memories that we'll cherish for years to come.

As we drove back to our hotel, Hotel Suites El Campanario, I couldn't help but reflect on how lucky I am to be able to share these experiences with my family. Moving from Goundam, Mali, to Montreal, Canada, and now exploring the wonders of Mexico – it's a journey I never could have imagined as a child. And to see my children embracing new cultures and adventures fills me with a sense of pride and gratitude.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Playa Punta Esmeralda, a beautiful beach known for its calm, shallow waters, perfect for the kids to splash around safely. We're also hoping to visit Cenotes Sac Actún, an underground cave system with stunning stalactites and crystal-clear waters. I've heard it's an otherworldly experience, and I can't wait to see it for myself. We'll round off the day with some shopping at Quinta Alegría Shopping Mall and a nice dinner at Harry's Steakhouse & Raw Bar.

Until then, au revoir from Playa del Carmen!
