First Impressions: Playa del Carmen Beckons

After a long journey from Montreal, touching down in Cancun and then making our way to Playa del Carmen, the family and I were eager to dive straight into the heart of this coastal city. I was particularly excited to introduce Aminata and Ibrahim to a new culture, and Fatoumata was looking forward to some much-needed relaxation. Today was all about soaking in the atmosphere, exploring key landmarks, and, of course, indulging in some authentic Mexican flavors.

Our first day in Playa del Carmen was nothing short of exhilarating. Despite the slight hiccup of forgetting our hats and sunglasses, we were determined to make the most of every moment. From exploring the iconic Parque Los Fundadores to wandering down the bustling La Quinta Avenida and immersing ourselves in the 3D Museum of Wonders, it was a day filled with culture, art, and delicious food.

A Morning Stroll Through Parque Los Fundadores

Our day began at Parque Los Fundadores, a place where Playa del Carmen's history and modern life intertwine. As we stepped into the park, the kids were immediately drawn to the towering El Portal Maya statue. Its intricate design and the story it tells of transformation and renewal captivated us all. The park was bustling with activity; local artisans displaying their crafts, families enjoying the sunshine, and the rhythmic sounds of traditional Mayan music filling the air.

Ibrahim, ever the active one, was fascinated by the Papantla dancers. The daring performers, dressed in vibrant costumes, climbed a tall pole and gracefully spun downwards, a spectacle that left us all in awe. Aminata, with her artistic eye, was more interested in the small Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, a charming chapel that offered a moment of peace amidst the lively atmosphere. The park, located right at the beginning of Quinta Avenida, was a perfect starting point to our exploration. We spent a good hour just wandering around, taking in the sights and sounds, and feeling the pulse of Playa del Carmen.

Exploring a new place is like reading a book for the first time. Each page turn reveals a new perspective, a new understanding.

Breakfast at Chez Céline

By mid-morning, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we headed to Chez Céline for breakfast. This charming French bakery, known for its authentic pastries and cozy ambiance, was the perfect spot to refuel. The aroma of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee wafted through the air as we stepped inside. Fatoumata and I ordered cappuccinos, while the kids opted for pain au chocolat and croissants. I couldn't resist trying their signature baguette, which was as good as the reviews suggested. The kids enjoyed watching the bakers through the glass window, mesmerized by the art of pastry making. It was a delightful start to the day, and the perfect fuel for our next adventure.

La Quinta Avenida: A Sensory Overload

With our energy levels replenished, we ventured onto La Quinta Avenida, Playa del Carmen's famous pedestrian street. This vibrant thoroughfare is a sensory overload in the best possible way. Lined with shops, restaurants, bars, and street performers, it's a place where you can find everything from handcrafted souvenirs to high-end fashion. The kids were immediately captivated by the colorful displays of Mexican handicrafts, while Fatoumata was drawn to the boutiques showcasing local designers. I enjoyed watching the street performers, each one adding to the lively atmosphere. We strolled along, soaking in the sights and sounds, and occasionally stopping to admire a particularly interesting shop or performance. The energy of La Quinta Avenida was infectious, and we found ourselves swept up in the excitement of the moment.

Lunch at Pik Nik Playa

As lunchtime approached, we decided to try Pik Nik Playa, a colorful Mexican restaurant known for its traditional dishes and friendly service. Tucked away just off 5th Avenue, this little gem offered a welcome respite from the bustling crowds. The menu was extensive, featuring a wide array of Mexican specialties. I opted for the chicken mole, a dish I had heard so much about, and it did not disappoint. The rich, complex sauce was a perfect blend of sweet and savory, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. Fatoumata chose the fish fillet with garlic and cilantro, while the kids went for tacos, a safe bet that always pleases. The owner, who spoke excellent English, was incredibly welcoming and made us feel right at home. It was a delicious and authentic Mexican meal that left us all feeling satisfied.

Immersed in Illusion at the 3D Museum of Wonders

In the afternoon, seeking a break from the heat, we visited the 3D Museum of Wonders. This interactive museum was a unique and engaging experience for the whole family. As the first 3D illusion art museum in the Americas, it offered a chance to step into a world of optical illusions and become part of the artwork. The kids were thrilled to pose with the 3D paintings, creating hilarious and memorable photos. We found ourselves surfing giant waves, escaping from dinosaurs, and even flying through the air. It was a fun and creative way to spend the afternoon, and it sparked our imaginations in unexpected ways.

Shopping at Paseo del Carmen

Before dinner, we decided to do some shopping at Paseo del Carmen Shopping Mall. Inspired by Mediterranean architecture, this open-air mall was a pleasant place to browse for souvenirs and gifts. The kids were on the lookout for something to remind them of our trip, while Fatoumata wanted to find some unique jewelry. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings. We found a few treasures to take home, and the kids were happy with their finds.

Dinner at La Cueva del Chango

For dinner, we chose La Cueva del Chango, a restaurant known for its natural Mexican cuisine and lush garden setting. This place is a little off the beaten path, but well worth the effort to find. As we entered, we were greeted by a tranquil oasis, complete with fountains, palmettos, and a koi pond. The menu featured a variety of traditional Mexican dishes, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Fatoumata was delighted to find an entire page of vegan options, and she chose a delicious vegetable enchilada. I opted for the fish tacos, while the kids enjoyed quesadillas. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the ambiance was magical. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Playa del Carmen.

Tomorrow, we’re planning a full day at Xcaret Park. I’ve heard so much about its natural beauty and cultural attractions, and the kids are especially excited about the underground rivers and the evening show. I’m also looking forward to trying out La Vagabunda for breakfast, and Oh lala! International Cuisine by George for dinner.

Despite forgetting our hats and sunglasses, today was a resounding success. We immersed ourselves in the local culture, explored key landmarks, and indulged in delicious food. It was a day filled with laughter, discovery, and unforgettable memories. I am already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring. The warmth of the people, the vibrant colors, and the rich history have already captured our hearts, and I know that this family adventure in Playa del Carmen will be one we cherish for years to come.
