Day 2: Jade, History, and a Dash of Irish Charm in San Cristobal
Discover San Cristobal de las Casas through jade museums, historic homes, and a taste of Irish culture. Family adventures await!
A Day of Discovery in San Cristobal
Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas. We explored ancient Mesoamerican history, wandered through a unique cultural center, and even found a little piece of Ireland in this charming Mexican town. Amara's eyes sparkled with every new sight, making the day even more special.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cocoliche. The Argentinian owned restaurant was perfect for a simple, delicious meal. I opted for one of their scrumptious pasta dishes. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Museo Mesoamericano del Jade.
Unveil the secrets of ancient Mesoamerican cultures at the Museo Mesoamericano del Jade in San Cristóbal de las Casas.
The museum is located within the Casa del Jade, in a grand colonial house in the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas.
The Museo Mesoamericano del Jade was captivating. Jade, a mystical precious stone, was a symbol of immortality, eternity, power, and love for the ancient peoples of Mesoamerica. The museum is dedicated to exhibiting the beauty and history of jade art. Inside the four rooms of this museum are replicas of the most representative pieces and jewels associated with eight Mesoamerican cultures. It was fascinating to see the intricate carvings and learn about the significance of jade in their cultures. Amara was particularly intrigued by the displays related to the Mayan culture, a testament to her growing interest in history. I found myself reflecting on the parallels between jade's significance here and the reverence for gemstones in Sri Lankan culture. It's amazing how different cultures, separated by vast distances, can share similar beliefs.
To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam on roads of lands remote, To travel is to live.
Next on our list was Casa Na Bolom, a place that truly embodies the spirit of cultural preservation.
Explore the rich heritage of Chiapas at Casa Na Bolom, a cultural center offering a museum, gardens, and accommodations in San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Once the home of archaeologist Frans Blom and his wife, photographer Gertrude Duby Blom, it now functions as a hotel, museum, and research center. The name Na Bolom means House of the Jaguar in Mayan, a nod to Frans Blom's nickname.
Walking through Casa Na Bolom felt like stepping back in time. The building itself, originally a monastery built in 1898, exudes history. The rooms are filled with artifacts, photographs, and personal items that offer glimpses into the lives of the Bloms and their work with the Lacandon Maya people. Gertrude Duby Blom's photographs, in particular, were incredibly moving, capturing the essence of the Lacandon community and their connection to the Chiapas rainforest. Amara was fascinated by the stories of the Bloms and their dedication to preserving indigenous culture. It was a great opportunity to teach her about the importance of respecting and protecting different ways of life. I was reminded of my own efforts to bridge cultures, both through my work and my travels.
Our last stop of the afternoon was the Arco del Carmen, a beautiful Mudejar-style structure that once served as an entrance to the city.
Discover the historical charm of Arco del Carmen, a stunning landmark in San Cristóbal de las Casas, steeped in culture and beauty.
Built in 1680, it's a striking example of colonial architecture, with three levels adorned with Moorish-influenced decorations. The arch now serves as a bell tower for the Iglesia del Carmen. It was the perfect spot for a quick photo op, capturing the essence of San Cristobal's historical charm.
As evening approached, we decided to try El Caldero for lunch, a culinary gem that embodies the warmth of authentic Mexican cuisine.

Nestled in the heart of San Cristóbal de las Casas, El Caldero, offers a delightful array of hearty broths and soups, like the renowned Caldo de Chipilin and Aztec Soup, served with love. The cozy atmosphere and delicious food made it a perfect spot to recharge after a day of exploring.
For dinner, we had Restaurante TULUC.

After dinner, Maximilian suggested we check out Clover Irish Pub for a nightcap.

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about finding an authentic Irish pub in the middle of Mexico, but I was curious.
Clover Irish Pub turned out to be an interesting experience. The pub had a lively atmosphere, with multiple screens showing sports and a decent selection of beers. It was a bit louder than I expected, but Amara enjoyed the energy. I couldn't help but compare it to some of the pubs I've visited in Europe, noting the similarities and differences in the atmosphere. While it wasn't exactly like being in Ireland, it was a fun way to end the day. I had a cocktail, while Maximilian enjoyed a beer. Amara enjoyed a soda.
As we walked back to Hotel Mansion del Valle, I reflected on the day's adventures.

San Cristobal de las Casas is a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and a touch of the unexpected. From ancient jade artifacts to colonial architecture and even a little bit of Ireland, there's something for everyone to discover. Amara was already asking about our plans for tomorrow, eager to explore more of this fascinating city. I'm excited too, especially for our visit to the Museo del Ámbar and the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya. I also want to check out the Boutique El Camino de los Altos. I think Amara will especially enjoy the free walking tour. It's going to be another day filled with exploration and cultural immersion. I must remember to pack my light jacket, as the evenings here can get quite cool. December in San Cristobal de las Casas brings daytime temperatures of 24°C, but nighttime brings a cool-down to 12°C.
Tomorrow promises even more cultural immersion, with visits to the Museo del Ámbar and the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya. I'm particularly excited about the free walking tour, which I hope will give us a deeper understanding of the city's history and culture. And perhaps we'll find another unexpected gem, just like Clover Irish Pub, along the way.
