Cultural Adventures in San Cristobal de las Casas with Family
Day 7: A Sunday Stroll Through San Cristobal's Soul
Discover the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas, from historic streets to culinary delights, on a culturally rich Sunday adventure.
Echoes of the Past, Flavors of Today
Today was a day of wandering, of letting San Cristóbal de las Casas seep into my soul. It’s funny how some places just resonate with you, isn't it? Today, I felt a little closer to understanding why this town holds such a special place in so many hearts.
The day began with a delightful breakfast at LA PEREGRINA COCINA YUCATECA. Maximilian, Amara and I enjoyed some traditional Yucatecan dishes. The restaurant had such a warm and inviting atmosphere, it was the perfect way to start our Sunday. I opted for the *huevos motuleños*, a dish I'd been eager to try since reading about it. The combination of flavors—the crisp tortillas, the creamy black beans, the perfectly fried eggs, and the sweet plantains—was simply divine. Amara, surprisingly, enjoyed the *cochinita pibil* tacos, though she did ask for a smaller portion, of course. Maximilian, ever the traditionalist, stuck to his usual coffee and pan dulce, but even he admitted that the atmosphere was something special.
After breakfast, we decided to explore the heart of San Cristóbal. We started our walk at Casa Mazariegos Recinto Histórico. This historic building, once the home of Captain Diego de Mazariegos, the founder of San Cristobal de las Casas, has witnessed centuries of history. Today, it serves as a convention center. Although we couldn't go inside, admiring its colonial architecture from the outside was enough to transport us back in time. Maximilian, with his architect's eye, was particularly fascinated by the building's details, pointing out the intricate stonework and the elegant facade.

From Casa Mazariegos, we strolled along the Andador Eclesiástico De San Cristóbal. This pedestrian walkway is the vibrant spine of the city, connecting key churches and landmarks. The air was alive with music, the scent of delicious food, and the chatter of locals and tourists alike. Amara was immediately captivated by the colorful displays of handicrafts, her eyes darting from one stall to another. The walkway was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists creating a vibrant atmosphere. We passed by the Cathedral, its imposing presence a reminder of the city's rich religious history. Further along, we admired the Templo de Santo Domingo, its facade a masterpiece of indigenous artistry.

The soul of a place is often found not in its grand monuments, but in the everyday moments that unfold within its streets.
For lunch, we ventured to Achiote Cochinita Pibil, a restaurant I had read great reviews about. I was eager to try their signature dish, *cochinita pibil*, a slow-roasted pork dish marinated in achiote paste and citrus juices. The flavors were incredible – the pork was tender and juicy, with a slightly smoky and earthy taste from the achiote. Maximilian and Amara both enjoyed it as well, although Amara needed a little help with the slightly spicy kick. It reminded me of some of the dishes my mother used to make, blending Sri Lankan spices with local ingredients.

After lunch, while Maximilian took Amara to the hotel for a nap, I decided to do some shopping. I headed to Karani-Art, a local shop known for its unique Mexican t-shirts and jewelry. I was on the hunt for a special souvenir to remind me of our time in San Cristobal. The shop was a treasure trove of colorful designs and traditional motifs. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted t-shirt with a Mayan design for myself and a small silver pendant for Amara. I also found a vibrant scarf for my mother, a little piece of Mexico to bring back to Germany.

In the late afternoon, after Amara woke up, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll back through the Andador Eclesiástico. The atmosphere had shifted slightly, with street performers and musicians adding to the lively ambiance. We stopped to listen to a group of musicians playing traditional Chiapanecan music, the marimba's sweet sounds filling the air. Amara, ever the curious one, even tried her hand at playing the marimba, much to the amusement of the musicians and the passersby.
For dinner, we chose Restaurante el Fogón de Jovel, a place recommended by several locals for its authentic Chiapanecan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional decor and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes, including *sopa de pan*, a traditional bread soup, and *mole de caderas*, a rich and flavorful sauce made with chili peppers and spices. The food was delicious, a true taste of Chiapas. The restaurant itself has a long history, having been founded in 1988 by Herbert Castellanos. It’s known for showcasing the region’s gastronomy and is staffed by people from the local community wearing traditional clothing. The flavors were bold and complex, a testament to the region's culinary heritage.

As we walked back to Hotel Mansion del Valle, the city was bathed in the warm glow of streetlights. The air was cool and crisp, a welcome change from the daytime heat. Amara was fast asleep in Maximilian's arms, her face peaceful and content. I couldn't help but smile, feeling grateful for this day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit El Arcotete, a natural archway formed by a river, and Castillo Zavaleta. I’m looking forward to seeing Amara’s reaction to the natural beauty of the region. We’ll start the day with breakfast at Cardamomo Cocina Hindu, followed by lunch at Te Quiero Verde and dinner at Bangcook Tailandés. And perhaps, if we have time, we'll stop by CALACA CASA DE MIXOLOGIA for a drink. It’s been a full day, and I’m already excited for what tomorrow brings.
San Cristobal de las Casas is slowly revealing its secrets to us, and I'm eager to uncover more. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, where tradition and modernity coexist, and where the warmth of the people shines through. I feel so lucky to be experiencing this with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I'm also happy that I remembered to pack light jackets, as the evenings here can get quite cool. Though I wish I hadn't forgotten the adapter for the Mexican power outlets, it seems we'll manage without it! I think I will also try to get a Spanish phrasebook tomorrow, to be able to communicate better with the locals.
Goodnight from San Cristobal, and see you tomorrow!
