Stepping Back in Time in Monemvasia

After months of anticipation, our family adventure in Monemvasia has finally begun! Leaving behind the hustle of Heidelberg for a week, we've plunged into a world where history whispers from every stone and the sea breeze carries tales of centuries past. It's a journey not just across geographical distances, but through time itself, and I'm eager to share every moment with you.

The journey here was quite something. As planned, we flew from Germany to Athens. Maximilian handled the drive from Athens to Monemvasia, and the views along the way were breathtaking, a perfect prelude to the beauty that awaited us. Amara was especially excited, her eyes glued to the window as we passed through the Greek countryside. I did forget the adapter for the Greek power outlets, but that's a small price to pay for being here. I also wish I had remembered to pack Amara's favorite snacks! I am sure we will find some new favorites here.

Our first stop was the heart of the town, Monemvasia Central Square. The square was bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists all soaking in the atmosphere. The December air was crisp, with temperatures hovering around 14°C, a welcome change from the colder weather we left behind in Germany. We took our time, wandering through the square, admiring the architecture and the lively energy that filled the space. There were no specific events taking place today, but the atmosphere itself was celebration enough.

Monemvasia is a place where every corner holds a story, every stone whispers a secret, and every sunset paints a masterpiece.

Next, we visited the Panagia Chrysafitissa Church, a small, whitewashed building that stands proudly in the square. Dating back to the 17th century, its history is intertwined with the tale of a miraculous icon found in a nearby well. The story goes that the icon was originally from the village of Chrysafa, but mysteriously appeared in Monemvasia. The church itself is small but beautiful, and it was so peaceful inside. According to tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary was transferred from Chrysafa, which is why the church has the name 'Chrysafitissa'. The holy water from the well is considered miraculous.

Afterward, we made our way to Elkomenos Christos, considered the oldest church in Monemvasia. Built in the 6th or 7th century, it has seen countless changes and has served as a place of worship through centuries of invasions and occupations. The church is dedicated to Jesus Christ and features a central dome and marble carvings. Inside, we admired the Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, including the 14th-century icon of Christ Elkomenos. The church has been damaged by pirates and its icons were stolen. Two thrones flank the entrance, which were traditionally reserved for the Byzantine Emperor and Empress. It was so interesting to learn that the icon of Christ Elkomenos was stolen and recovered before being returned in 2011. The architecture of the church is a blend of Byzantine styles.

For lunch, we chose Chrisovoulo Cafe Restaurant Bar, drawn in by its inviting atmosphere and the promise of local wines. We enjoyed a delightful meal on the balcony, with a beautiful sea view. The food was very tasty, and the staff was friendly. It was far better than a taverna, offering variations and special ingredients. Maximilian and I shared a bottle of local wine, while Amara enjoyed a specially prepared pasta dish. Chrisovoulo has a new wine bar, where you can taste the local wines accompanied with Greek delicacies. The name Chrisovoulo has ancient roots in imperial writs. The chef aims to take you on a gastronomic tour of the region.

In the afternoon, I convinced Maximilian and Amara to do some shopping at Pietra Boutique Monemvasia. I wanted to find a special souvenir to remind me of our trip. The store offers a range of clothing and accessories, blending style with tradition. I found a beautiful scarf that reminded me of my Sri Lankan heritage, and Amara picked out a cute dress. Pietra Boutique is a clothing store where style meets tradition.

For dinner, we opted for Matoula Restaurant, a tavern known for its traditional Greek cuisine and stunning views. The restaurant has a cosy atmosphere and a beautiful view. Matoula Restaurant has a perfect view, but some have said it is a tourist trap. The tavern has been around since 1950. We shared a variety of dishes, including Greek salad, chicken souvlaki, and dolmades. The tavern of Matoula remains the culinary ambassador of Monemvasia cuisine for 70 years. Matoula's father was the uncle of Yannis Ritsos, who was born in Monemvasia. The tavern has a privileged, spacious balcony.

To end our first day, we enjoyed a glass of wine at Oinomelo. The service and food was amazing. It feels like dining in a home with a mix of old, cherished furniture and simple, relaxed spaces. Elena created this warm and inviting place with immense love and passion. The restaurant has a homely feel. We were greeted with a warm welcome from the owner Elena and her daughter. Oinomelo offers exceptional food, a warm and friendly atmosphere, and impeccable service. The seafood plateau was fresh and delicious.

As the sun set, casting a golden glow over the town, we made our way back to the Likinia Hotel, our home for the next week. The hotel offers stunning city views and modern comforts, making it a perfect retreat after our daily adventures. I am so grateful to be here with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Monemvasia Archaeological Collection, visit the framed panoramic point, and see the Lighthouse of Monemvasia. I'm also hoping we can find some time to relax at Malvasia Café. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

The day has been nothing short of magical, a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. Monemvasia has already captured our hearts, and I can't wait to see what other treasures it holds. I am so happy to be sharing this experience with Maximilian and Amara. Good night from Monemvasia!
