First Day in Oaxaca: A Cultural Awakening
Hello from Oaxaca! Arriving in this vibrant city with my friends felt like stepping into a painting bursting with color and life. After the long journey from Berlin, via Mexico City, I was eager to dive into the heart of Oaxaca. Today was all about soaking in the atmosphere, exploring historical landmarks, and, of course, indulging in the local cuisine.
Our adventure began at the Zócalo, the main square, which is the city's cultural hub. Even though it's August, and the weather is warm with daytime temperatures hovering around 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C), the square was bustling with activity. The air was filled with music, laughter, and the aroma of street food. I was immediately captivated by the energy of the place. It's amazing to think that even with the chance of rain being around 61% at the start of August, the square remains so lively.

We took a leisurely stroll around the square, admiring the colonial architecture and watching the locals go about their day. Street vendors were selling everything from colorful balloons to traditional crafts, and families were enjoying the lively atmosphere. It was the perfect introduction to Oaxacan culture, reminding me of the bustling markets back in Buon Ma Thuot, though spiced with a unique Mexican flair. Hans would have loved the energy here; I'll have to bring him next time.
For breakfast, we ventured to Casa Taviche, a local favorite known for its authentic Mexican cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy courtyard, providing a peaceful escape from the bustling city streets. I appreciated the family-friendly atmosphere, and the menu changes daily, which adds a delightful surprise to each visit. I opted for the *chilaquiles*, a traditional breakfast dish of fried tortilla chips smothered in salsa and topped with cheese and eggs. It was the perfect way to start the day, flavorful and satisfying. My friends tried the *enchiladas* and freshly squeezed orange juice, which they said was awesome.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Museum of Cultures of Oaxaca, Santo Domingo, housed in a stunning 17th-century convent. The architecture alone was worth the visit, with its impressive central courtyard and intricate stone carvings. Inside, the museum offered a fascinating journey through the history and cultures of Oaxaca, from ancient times to the present day.

I was particularly captivated by the exhibits on the Mixtec and Zapotec civilizations, showcasing their intricate jewelry, pottery, and other artifacts. The treasure from Tomb No. 7 at Monte Albán was a highlight, with its exquisite gold, silver, and jade pieces. Learning about the continuity between pre-Hispanic and contemporary cultures was eye-opening. It reminded me of the importance of preserving our own cultural heritage back in Vietnam. I made a mental note to call my parents and ask them about some of the traditional stories they used to tell me.
Traveling isn't just about seeing new places; it's about experiencing new cultures and connecting with the people who call them home.
For lunch, we decided to try Catedral Restaurant, located conveniently between the Zócalo and Santo Domingo. This established restaurant has been around since 1976 and is known for its reliably tasty food and lovely atmosphere. We chose a spot in the back courtyard next to the fountain, enjoying the elegant dining experience. I decided to try the *mole negro*, a Oaxacan specialty made with over 30 ingredients. The rich, dark sauce was slightly sweet and spicy, with a hint of chocolate. It was served with confit of turkey, plantains, and creamy black beans – simply superb. My friends opted for the *huitlacoche* crepes and *sopa de guias*, both of which they raved about. The service was exceptional, and the live piano music added to the ambiance.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to set, we explored more of the Zócalo. I found myself drawn to the street art, which added a contemporary layer to the historical surroundings. The murals told stories of Oaxaca's past and present, reflecting the city's vibrant spirit. The Zocalo is always active with lots of events and celebrations. It's hard to pass through and not feel the vibrance of the city.
As evening approached, we sought a place to experience Oaxaca's famous mezcal. We chose La Mezcaloteca, known for its extensive selection and educational tastings. The venue had an intimate atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable, guiding us through the nuances of each agave. I learned about the traditional methods of mezcal production and the different flavors that each agave variety imparts. We sampled a few different mezcals, each with its unique character and story. It was a fascinating experience, and I left with a newfound appreciation for this traditional spirit. It reminded me a bit of the rice wine my grandfather used to make back in Vietnam, though with a distinctly smoky flavor.

Finally, for dinner, we indulged in a meal at Los Danzantes, a restaurant celebrated for its commitment to sustainability and slow food. The attention to detail was unmatched, and the restaurant showcased traditional Mexican flavors through gastronomic creations. I opted for a seasonal cocktail, Señor Pepino, a delightfully fresh gin cocktail that worked as a fantastic palate cleanser between courses. For my main course, I enjoyed a modern take on a Oaxacan classic, savoring every bite. The ambiance was perfect, and the service was impeccable, making it a memorable dining experience.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Zona Arqueológica de Monte Albán and Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca. I'm particularly excited about exploring the ancient ruins of Monte Albán and learning more about the Zapotec civilization. We'll also have breakfast at Hierba Dulce, lunch at La Olla, and dinner at Pitiona. And, of course, we'll make time to shop for local crafts at La Casa de las Artesanías de Oaxaca.
As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Oaxaca. It's a city that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I'll savor the memories of this incredible first day.
