A Day of Icelandic Wonders
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Iceland and savoring its unique flavors. From chasing majestic waterfalls to indulging in local delicacies, it was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and culinary delights. I am so grateful for these experiences that allow me to connect with nature and the local culture.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Old Bank - Hotel Aldan. I love the charm of this hotel, spread across multiple historical buildings. The ambiance was perfect for fueling up before a day of adventure. I opted for the Icelandic pancakes with berries and a strong cup of coffee, which set the tone for a day of exploration. It's always a treat to start the day with a delicious and authentic meal.
Fueled and ready, I set off to Hengifoss, Iceland's third-tallest waterfall. The drive itself was stunning, with panoramic views of the Icelandic landscape. As I started the hike, I passed Lagarfljot, Iceland's third-largest lake, and couldn't help but scan the waters for any sign of the mythical creature said to dwell within. The trail was a bit challenging, with a steady incline, but the views along the way were more than worth the effort. The landscape was dotted with vibrant wildflowers and moss-covered rocks, making it a photographer's dream.
About halfway up, I was rewarded with the sight of Litlanesfoss, a smaller waterfall framed by towering basalt columns. The geometric patterns of the columns were mesmerizing, and I spent a good while capturing its beauty from every angle. I was so impressed by the basalt columns, it felt like entering an art gallery. The sound of the water cascading over the rocks was incredibly soothing, a perfect moment of tranquility amidst the hike. It was a reminder of the simple, profound beauty that nature offers.
The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its grand landscapes, but in the intimate details that reveal themselves along the journey.
Finally, I reached Hengifoss. The sheer scale of the waterfall was breathtaking, plunging 394 feet into the basalt gorge below. The red stripes of clay between the basalt layers added a unique touch, making it unlike any waterfall I've ever seen. I took some time to just sit and absorb the scene, feeling the mist on my face and listening to the thunderous roar of the water. I was so proud of myself for completing the hike, and the view was the best reward. Patricia, you made it!
After descending from Hengifoss, I decided to visit Gufu waterfall. It is located near the village of Seyðisfjörður, and is often compared to Skogafoss waterfall, but Gufufoss is smaller and more peaceful. The waterfall is easily accessible and offers a serene escape from the crowds. I followed the trail that leads up above the waterfall, which I would absolutely recommend to anyone who visits it, because it offers the best panoramic view of the fjords below. The steam rising from the waterfall created a magical, almost ethereal atmosphere, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The falls are part of the Fjarðará river, which has 25 waterfalls in total, which makes it a very special place.
With a day of hiking under my belt, I was ready for a delicious lunch. I headed to Skaftfell Bistro, a cozy restaurant known for its local ingredients and artistic vibe. I ordered the Arctic char, caught fresh from a nearby river, and it was cooked to perfection. The bistro itself was charming, with art displays on the walls and a relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.
In the evening, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Vogafjós Farm Resort. Although it required a bit of a drive, the experience was well worth it. The resort is a working farm, and the restaurant has windows overlooking the cows in their stalls. I ordered the lamb shank, which was tender and flavorful, and enjoyed the unique ambiance of dining in a farm setting. It's fascinating to see how the ingredients are sourced and prepared, and it adds a special touch to the dining experience.
To cap off the day, I ventured to Herðubíó, a local bar in Seydisfjordur. It's always nice to experience the local nightlife and mingle with the residents. The bar had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed a glass of Icelandic beer while chatting with some locals. It was a great way to learn more about the town and its culture, and I felt a real sense of connection to the community.
As I headed back to Hótel Snæfell, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Iceland's natural beauty is truly awe-inspiring, and the local culture is warm and welcoming. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Ströndin Studio and Klifbrekku Waterfall, eager to explore more of what Seydisfjordur has to offer. I'm also planning to have breakfast at Hótel Snæfell, lunch at The Filling Station / Seyðisfjörður Food Coop, and dinner at Nordic Restaurant. I am also looking forward to visiting Gullabuid, a local shop.
Reflecting on today, I am reminded of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. Whether it's the sound of a waterfall, the taste of local cuisine, or the warmth of human connection, these are the moments that make travel so enriching. And as I continue my solo adventure in Seydisfjordur, I am excited to see what tomorrow brings. This trip is not just about seeing new places, but about discovering new aspects of myself, and that's a journey I'm incredibly grateful for.
I am also grateful that I remembered to pack my camera, as the memories I have captured today will last a lifetime. I am also grateful that I packed my hiking boots, as they have been essential for navigating the rugged terrain. However, I am still kicking myself for forgetting my rain jacket and power adapter. The rain has been unpredictable, and I've had to rely on layering my clothes to stay dry. And the power adapter would have been incredibly useful for charging my electronics. But these are minor inconveniences, and I am determined not to let them detract from the overall experience. After all, travel is about embracing the unexpected, and I am ready for whatever challenges and adventures lie ahead.
