Florentine Royalty for a Day

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Florentine history and art. I've always been fascinated by the stories behind grand palaces and their gardens, and Florence certainly doesn't disappoint. With my friends, I set out to explore the Pitti Palace, the Palatine Gallery, and the sprawling Boboli Gardens. It was a day filled with art, history, and the kind of beauty that takes your breath away.

Our day began, as it has for the past few mornings, with breakfast at Hotel Cantoria. A simple meal, but it sets us up perfectly for the day ahead. I made sure to grab an extra pastry, knowing we'd be doing a lot of walking.

Boboli Gardens: A Winter Stroll Through History

Our first stop was the Boboli Gardens. Despite it being February, there was a unique charm to the gardens. The bare trees and quiet pathways offered a different perspective, a serene contrast to the bustling city. The gardens, a sprawling expanse of green, are like an outdoor museum. As we wandered through the meticulously landscaped greenery, I couldn’t help but marvel at the statues and fountains that dotted the landscape. Even in the relative chill of winter, the gardens held a certain magic.

We entered through the Pitti Palace entrance, which gave us immediate access to the gardens. The Boboli Gardens are vast, and even though it's winter, there's still plenty to see. The statues, fountains, and grottoes create a captivating blend of art and nature. I was particularly impressed by the Fountain of Neptune and the Ocean Fountain.

The gardens were initially laid out by the Medici family, establishing a style that would influence European courts for centuries. The blend of art, nature, and history is truly captivating. We explored hidden pathways, admired the sculptures, and took in the panoramic views of Florence. Even in February, the gardens offer a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

Pitti Palace: A Glimpse into Royal Life

Next, we stepped inside the imposing Pitti Palace. Originally built for the Florentine banker Luca Pitti in 1458, it was later bought by the Medici family in 1549 and became their principal residence. The palace is massive, and its architecture is striking. According to Vasari, the palace was designed by Brunelleschi, though this hasn't been definitively proven. The scale of the palace is meant to impress, and it certainly does.

The Pitti Palace is not just one museum but several. It houses the Palatine Gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art, the Museum of Costume and Fashion, and the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, among others. Each offers a different glimpse into the lives of those who once called this palace home.

Palatine Gallery: A Treasure Trove of Art

Our focus was the Palatine Gallery, which houses an extraordinary collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings. The gallery is arranged in a way that reflects the taste of its former inhabitants, with paintings displayed in lavishly decorated rooms. This is unlike many modern museums, which follow a chronological order.

The Palatine Gallery is located on the first floor of the Pitti Palace. It's named after the fact that it was once the palace of the reigning family and was opened to the public in 1828. The gallery still retains the layout of a private collection, with a mix of interior decoration and original picture frames.

One of the most significant groups of works in the collection are those by Titian and Raphael. These paintings came to the Medici family through Vittoria della Rovere. Raphael's Madonna of the Grand Duke and Titian's Portrait of a Gentleman are particularly memorable.

The rooms themselves are works of art, with frescoes by Pietro da Cortona. These frescoes depict classical myths and allude to the life and education of the prince. The combination of the frescoes and the paintings creates a stunning visual experience.

The gallery provides a full view of 17th-century European painting, with works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Caravaggio. Each room is a feast for the eyes, and it's easy to spend hours wandering through the gallery.

Shopping for Leather Goods at Scuola del Cuoio S.r.l.

After our fill of art and history, we decided to indulge in a bit of Florentine craftsmanship. We made our way to Scuola del Cuoio S.r.l., a renowned leather school and shop located near Santa Croce. Founded after World War II, the school was established by Franciscan friars and Florentine leather artisans to teach orphaned children a trade. Today, it continues to produce high-quality leather goods, and it's fascinating to watch the artisans at work.

As someone who appreciates the blend of tradition and craftsmanship, I found Scuola del Cuoio particularly interesting. The school was founded in the aftermath of World War II with the aim of providing orphaned children with a practical skill. The Franciscan friars of the Monastery of Santa Croce collaborated with the Gori and Casini families to create the school.

Walking through the workshop, we saw artisans cutting, stitching, and crafting beautiful leather items. The air was filled with the scent of leather, and the sound of tools at work created a unique atmosphere. I ended up purchasing a small leather journal, a perfect memento of our time in Florence. I also considered buying a briefcase, but decided against it, knowing that I had already bought too many souvenirs.

The Florentine leather-making tradition is kept alive by the masters at Scuola del Cuoio, passing on their artistry to new generations.

Lunch with a View at Golden View Firenze

By this point, we were all quite hungry, so we headed to Golden View Firenze for lunch. This restaurant is known for its stunning views of the Ponte Vecchio and the Arno River. Fortunately, we had made a reservation, as the restaurant was quite busy.

The restaurant's location on the south bank of the Arno offers incredible views, especially at sunset. The atmosphere is romantic and inviting, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch. The restaurant also has a cocktail bar, which we decided to try after our meal.

The menu features Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, with a focus on fresh seafood. We started with a selection of appetizers, including Tuscan white beans and fennel salami. For the main course, I opted for the pasta with fresh peas, which was delicious. My friends tried the seafood dishes, which they raved about.

The service was excellent, and the staff made us feel welcome. The combination of the delicious food, the stunning views, and the great service made for a memorable lunch.

Dinner at Buca dell'Orafo: A Hidden Gem

For dinner, we wanted to try something a bit more traditional, so we chose Buca dell'Orafo. This restaurant is located just a few steps from the Ponte Vecchio and is known for its authentic Florentine cuisine. The name Orafo means goldsmith, a nod to the neighborhood's history as a center for gold workshops.

Buca dell'Orafo is tucked away in what was once a medieval palace. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, with a traditional menu featuring regional ingredients. The beef is sourced from a farm in the Maremma countryside, and the wine list highlights Tuscan producers.

We started with the Tuscan white beans drizzled with olive oil, which were simple but delicious. For the main course, I ordered the Florentine steak, a must-try dish in Florence. My friends opted for the pasta dishes, which were equally impressive. The portions were generous, and the food was hearty and satisfying.

The restaurant is small and intimate, with only a few tables. The service was friendly and attentive, and we felt like we were dining in someone's home. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Florence.

Reflections on a Day of Florentine Splendor

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible experiences we had. From the serene beauty of the Boboli Gardens to the artistic treasures of the Pitti Palace and the Palatine Gallery, Florence had once again captivated me.

Our culinary experiences were equally memorable, from the delightful lunch at Golden View Firenze to the traditional dinner at Buca dell'Orafo. Each meal was a celebration of Tuscan cuisine and hospitality.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Basilica of Santa Croce, Piazza Santa Trinita, and the Basilica di Santo Spirito. I'm also looking forward to trying the famous sandwiches at All’Antico Vinaio for lunch and experiencing the cocktails at Mad - Souls & Spirits in the evening. I am already excited about what tomorrow will bring.

For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of Florentine adventures. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, explore, and share my experiences with all of you.

Until tomorrow,
Shota.
