Florence from Above and Within

Today was a day of contrasts, experiencing Florence from its soaring heights to the intimate depths of its art and history. I always find it fascinating how a single day can encapsulate so much of a city's character, leaving me with a deeper understanding and appreciation.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Cantoria, fuelling up for the adventures that lay ahead. The convenience of starting the day right at our accommodation is something I truly value, especially when there's so much to see and do.

First on the agenda was the Campanile di Giotto. The crisp February air nipped at my cheeks as I gazed up at the tower, its intricate marble patterns a testament to the artistry of the Renaissance. The climb was, admittedly, a bit of a challenge – those 414 steps are no joke! But with each level, the anticipation grew, and the views became more rewarding. From the top, Florence unfolded beneath me like a living map, the terracotta rooftops stretching towards the Arno River, the Duomo's dome a majestic centerpiece. I could even spot the hills where we'll be heading tomorrow to Piazzale Michelangelo. It was a breathtaking panorama, a perfect reminder of why I love to travel and seek out these vantage points.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After descending from the heights of the Campanile, Eleanor, who met us near Piazza del Duomo, suggested a visit to the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery that I had read so much about. Located in Piazza della Signoria, the Loggia is home to impressive sculptures, including Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women and Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa. Eleanor pointed out the intricate details and historical context of each piece, bringing the stories behind the sculptures to life. It was fascinating to learn about the Loggia's history, how it once served as a stage for public ceremonies and later became a showcase for the Medici family's power and artistic patronage. The Loggia dei Lanzi offered a glimpse into Florence's artistic evolution, from its Gothic origins to its Renaissance splendor. It’s amazing to see how art and history intertwine so seamlessly in this city.

Our next stop was the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, a treasure trove of Renaissance sculpture. Housed in what was once a palace, prison, and police headquarters, the Bargello now displays masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo, and other renowned artists. I was particularly drawn to Donatello's David, its bronze form radiating a quiet strength and grace. The museum's collection of decorative arts, including majolica pottery and intricate ivory carvings, provided a fascinating glimpse into the craftsmanship of the era. I found myself lost in the details, admiring the skill and artistry of these long-ago artisans. Kenji would have loved seeing the bronze animals.

After immersing ourselves in art and history, it was time for lunch. Eleanor recommended Osteria dell'Enoteca, a local favorite known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant exuded a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, with exposed brick walls and the aroma of delicious food filling the air. I decided to try the Bistecca dell'Osteria, a traditional Florentine steak grilled over an open flame. The meat was flavorful, juicy, and cooked to perfection, a true testament to the region's culinary heritage. The restaurant's focus on Tuscan cuisine was evident in every dish, making it a unique and delicious experience.

In the afternoon, I ventured off on my own to Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique. I’d been meaning to get a new leather jacket and Eleanor had suggested I visit this shop. The owner, Davide, was incredibly helpful, guiding me through the different styles and qualities of leather. I ended up choosing a classic black leather jacket, expertly crafted and tailored to fit me perfectly. It was a purchase I knew I’d treasure for years to come, a tangible reminder of my time in Florence.

As evening approached, we gathered at Il Latini for dinner. This historic trattoria is a Florentine institution, known for its traditional Tuscan dishes and convivial atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to experience the authentic flavors of Florence. We shared a table with a friendly couple from Germany, exchanging stories and travel tips over plates of pappa al pomodoro and bistecca alla fiorentina. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, a true reflection of Tuscan hospitality.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Florence has to offer. From the panoramic views atop Giotto's Campanile to the artistic treasures within the Bargello Museum, from the exquisite leather goods at Davide Cerasi to the authentic Tuscan flavors at Osteria dell'Enoteca and Il Latini, every experience was a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage. It was a day of contrasts, blending the grandeur of Renaissance art with the simple pleasures of Tuscan cuisine. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and share my experiences with you.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Piazzale Michelangelo for more panoramic views, explore the Giardino Bardini, and visit the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte. I’m particularly looking forward to capturing the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo, a moment I’ve heard is truly magical. And perhaps, after a day of sightseeing, we'll unwind at the Atrium Bar. Until then, arrivederci from Florence!
