Day 8: A Day of Florentine Icons: Bridges, Domes, and Basilicas
Exploring Florence's most iconic landmarks with friends, from Ponte Vecchio to Brunelleschi's Dome and Santa Maria Novella.
Florence's Enduring Beauty
Today was a whirlwind of Florentine icons, a day etched in my memory as we, a group of friends, navigated through the heart of this Renaissance city. From the shimmering reflections on the Arno to the breathtaking heights of Brunelleschi's Dome, Florence unfolded its timeless beauty before us. Each step was a journey through history, art, and the vibrant spirit of a city that continues to inspire.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Cantoria. Fuelled up, we set out to conquer the day, starting with the Ponte Vecchio. As we approached the bridge, the morning light danced on the Arno, casting a golden glow on the shops that lined the historic structure. The Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge spared from destruction during World War II, stood as a testament to Florence's resilience. It's incredible to think that this bridge has stood since medieval times, rebuilt in 1345 after a devastating flood. The history is palpable as you walk across it. I remember reading that initially, butchers and tanners occupied these shops, but thankfully, Ferdinand I decided that only goldsmiths and jewellers could operate here, improving the aroma significantly! The glittering displays were captivating, a testament to the craftsmanship that has thrived here for centuries.

As we strolled along, I couldn't help but marvel at the Vasari Corridor, that secret passageway commissioned by the Medici family. It allowed them to move between the Uffizi Gallery and the Pitti Palace without mingling with the masses. It's a testament to their power and influence. Eleanor would find this fascinating, given her love for history.
The soul of Florence lies not just in its stones and art, but in the stories whispered through the ages.
Next on our agenda was Brunelleschi's Dome. As we approached the Duomo, its sheer scale was awe-inspiring. The intricate details of the marble facade seemed to tell a story of their own. I had pre-booked our Brunelleschi Pass, which included access to all the monuments in Piazza del Duomo. This was essential, as it allowed us to reserve our time slot for climbing the Dome, something I highly recommend doing in advance.
The climb itself was an experience. All 463 steps of it! The staircase was narrow and winding, and I could feel my heart pounding as we ascended. I made sure to take it slow, especially for the sake of my friends. About 5 minutes of delay are allowed, but visitors are required to be on time for the best experience. As we climbed, we were rewarded with glimpses of Vasari's Last Judgement frescoes, a breathtaking masterpiece that covers the interior of the dome. It's incredible to think that these frescoes were created so high up, a true testament to the skill and dedication of the artists.
Reaching the top was an unforgettable moment. The panoramic views of Florence were simply stunning. From Giotto's Bell Tower to the Arno River, the entire city unfolded before us. I could see the red-tiled roofs of the buildings below, the rolling hills in the distance, and the bustling streets filled with life. It was a moment of pure joy, a feeling of being on top of the world.

After descending from the Dome, we were ready for lunch. I had made a reservation at Ristorante Belcore, drawn in by its reputation for exceptional Italian cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant was a welcome respite from the crowds, a cozy and inviting space where we could relax and recharge. I had read that the owner was from Morocco and the chef from Japan. I was intrigued by the fusion of culinary influences. The reviews I read were excellent, so I had high expectations.
The meal did not disappoint. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. We sampled a variety of dishes, from handmade pasta to fresh seafood, all prepared with the finest local ingredients. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable, and eager to share their passion for food. It was a truly memorable dining experience, one that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Florence. The atmosphere was romantic and trendy, a beautiful place for a great meal.

In the afternoon, we made our way to Santa Maria Novella. As we approached the basilica, I was struck by its elegant facade, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. The lower part of the facade is in Romanesque-Gothic style, while the upper part was completed in 1470 by Leon Battista Alberti. The S-curved volutes designed by Alberti were an absolute innovation, and they have been used on churches with sloping roofs ever since.
Stepping inside, I was immediately enveloped by the serene atmosphere. The basilica was filled with art treasures, from frescoes by masters of Gothic and early Renaissance to funerary monuments commissioned by wealthy Florentine families. I was particularly drawn to Masaccio's Trinità, one of the earliest paintings to use perspective, and Giotto's Crucifix, an early work of the master. It's amazing to think that this basilica has been a center of faith and art for centuries, a testament to Florence's enduring cultural legacy.

Before dinner, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy, specifically, Florence's famous leather goods. We ventured into several shops, each filled with the rich aroma of leather and the sight of beautifully crafted bags, jackets, and accessories. Florence has held a reputation for quality leather production for hundreds of years. I was on the hunt for a new wallet, something that would remind me of my time in Florence. I found a small, unassuming shop that seemed to offer quality goods at reasonable prices. I remembered some advice I read about buying leather in Florence. The leather should smell musky and natural, feel smooth and supple, and have tight, regular stitching. After careful inspection, I found a wallet that met all the criteria.

For our final meal of the day, we had reservations at Ristorante Santa Elisabetta, a Michelin-starred restaurant located in a Byzantine tower. I had heard that it was one of the most romantic and trendy restaurants in Florence, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The restaurant has only 10 tables, making it an intimate and exclusive dining experience.
From the moment we stepped inside, we were transported to another world. The ambiance was elegant and refined, the service impeccable, and the food was simply divine. We opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey that showcased the chef's creativity and skill. Each dish was a surprise, a symphony of flavours and textures that delighted the senses. The wine pairings were perfect, enhancing the overall dining experience. It was truly a meal to remember, a fitting end to a day of Florentine icons.

As we walked back to our hotel, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The Arno River shimmered in the darkness, reflecting the lights of the Ponte Vecchio. I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude, a feeling of having experienced something truly special. Florence had captured my heart, and I knew that I would never forget this day of bridges, domes, and basilicas.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our Florentine adventure. We plan to visit the Cappelle Medicee, the San Marco Museum, and Piazza del Duomo. We'll also be having lunch at Ristorante Romantico il Paiolo and a farewell dinner at Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura. And perhaps, a final drink at Friends Pub to celebrate our journey. I'm looking forward to it, but also feeling a tinge of sadness that our trip is coming to an end.
