Exploring the Enchanting Fjords of Isafjordur with Friends
Day 7: Chasing Waterfalls and Literary Finds in Isafjordur
Discover the allure of Isafjordur, Iceland, with its stunning waterfalls, charming bookstore, and culinary delights. A day of pure bliss!
A Day of Icelandic Wonders
Today was one of those travel days that just felt… right. You know, the kind where everything falls into place, and you're left with a sense of contentment and awe. It wasn't about ticking off a list of must-see attractions, but rather soaking in the essence of Isafjordur, letting its charm seep into my soul. From chasing waterfalls to getting lost in a bookstore, every moment felt like a page torn from a storybook.
And the best part? I got to share it all with my wonderful friends.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mánagisting Guesthouse, where we've been staying. The reviews I'd read beforehand were a mixed bag, but honestly, it's been perfectly adequate. It's centrally located, and the free parking is a definite plus. The room was clean, and the staff were friendly, which is all I really need. I did miss Elena and Max this morning, though. Breakfasts just aren't the same without my little family.

After breakfast, we set off to explore Tungudalur Vestfjarðagöng valley and its hidden gem, Bunárfoss waterfall. The drive itself was breathtaking, with snow-dusted mountains rising on either side of us. I had read that Bunárfoss enhances the beauty of Tungudalur valley, and it was definitely true.

The weather was crisp, with a promise of light snow, so we bundled up in our warmest gear. I was kicking myself for forgetting my snow goggles back in Bielefeld, but I was determined not to let it dampen my spirits. The path to the waterfall was a bit icy, but nothing our hiking boots couldn't handle. As we got closer, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and soon enough, we were face-to-face with the magnificent Bunárfoss.

The waterfall was partially frozen, creating a stunning display of ice and water. I spent a good hour snapping photos from every angle, trying to capture its raw beauty. I even attempted a few selfies, though I'm pretty sure my face was frozen in a permanent state of 'cheese' by the end of it. The valley was beautiful with the waterfall enhancing it.
After our waterfall adventure, we drove back to Ísafjörður, our stomachs rumbling. Lunch was at Húsið, a charming restaurant that I had read about. Apparently, it means The House in Icelandic, and it certainly felt like stepping into someone's cozy home.

The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We managed to snag a table by the window, which offered a lovely view of the harbor. Húsið is known for serving fresh, local ingredients, and the menu was filled with tempting options. After much deliberation, I decided on the seafood soup, while my friends opted for the fish of the day and a burger.
My seafood soup was outstanding – rich, flavorful, and packed with fresh seafood. It was the perfect antidote to the chilly weather outside. My friends raved about their meals as well, and we all left Húsið feeling satisfied and content. I made a mental note to bring Max and Elena here next time; I know they would love it.
With our bellies full, we decided to explore the town a bit. Ísafjörður is small and easily walkable, with colorful houses and charming shops lining the streets. We stumbled upon Penninn Eymundsson Ísafirði, a bookstore that looked like it had been plucked straight from a movie set.

Stepping inside was like entering a different world. The store was housed in a historic building dating back to 1927, and the interior was filled with old-world charm. The shelves were stacked high with books in Icelandic and English, and there was a cozy reading nook in the corner.
I could have easily spent hours browsing the shelves, but I managed to restrain myself and only bought a couple of Icelandic novels and a travel guide. I also picked up a few postcards to send to Elena and Max, because I know Elena loves getting mail. Penninn Eymundsson also sells office and school supplies, souvenirs and gifts.
As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back to the hotel, tired but happy. We had dinner at Jötunn restaurant, which was a short walk from our guesthouse. I decided to try their sushi, based on a recommendation I had seen online. The sushi was delicious, and the service was excellent. Jötunn restaurant has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but smile. Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the unexpected discoveries, the chance encounters, and the simple joys of experiencing a new place. Isafjordur has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Minnibakki Beach and the Fishermen's Monument [cite: Itinerary of Tomorrow]. I'm especially excited about Minnibakki Beach; I've heard it's stunning, even in the winter. I'm also looking forward to trying Dokkan Brugghús, a local bar and restaurant [cite: Itinerary of Tomorrow].
Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones you don't plan, the ones that unfold organically as you wander and explore. As I reflect on my journey, I'm reminded of how much I value these moments of connection – with nature, with culture, and with the people I'm fortunate enough to share these experiences with. It's these shared moments that weave the fabric of lasting memories. I remember when Max and I first started dating, we took a spontaneous trip to Prague. We had no itinerary, no expectations, just a desire to explore a new city together. We got lost in the cobblestone streets, stumbled upon hidden cafes, and shared countless laughs. It was on that trip that I realized Max was someone special, someone who appreciated the beauty of the unplanned, just like me.
And now, years later, as I explore Isafjordur with my friends, I feel that same sense of joy and connection. It's a reminder that travel isn't just about seeing new places, but about creating new memories with the people you love. I know that when I look back on this trip, it won't be the waterfalls or the museums that I remember most, but the laughter, the conversations, and the shared moments of wonder.
Speaking of moments of wonder, I have to share a funny anecdote from today. As we were leaving the bookstore, my friend tripped on the curb and nearly fell flat on her face. Luckily, I was quick enough to catch her, but not before she let out a shriek that echoed down the street. Everyone turned to look, and for a moment, we were mortified. But then, we burst out laughing, and soon everyone around us was laughing too. It was one of those silly, spontaneous moments that you can't plan, but that make travel so memorable.
The weather in Tungudalur tonight will be cold. I am glad that I packed warm clothes for this trip. I still wish I had packed my snow goggles and thermal socks. I will remember to pack them next time I travel to a cold, snowy place.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to travel and explore new places. I am also grateful for my friends, who make every trip so much more fun. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I am confident that it will be another day filled with adventure and wonder. After all, as they say in Iceland, Þetta reddast – everything will be alright.
Join me and my friends as we uncover the magic of Isafjordur, Iceland, amidst stunning fjords and serene landscapes.
