Family Adventure in Copper Canyon
Day 2: Chasing Waterfalls and Sipping Stouts in Copper Canyon
Immerse yourself in the beauty of Cascada de Basaseachi National Park and enjoy local brews at Cervecería Copper Lodge with family.
Day 2: Majestic Waterfalls and Cabin Brews
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Copper Canyon and savoring the local flavors. From the awe-inspiring Cascada de Basaseachi to the cozy ambiance of a local brewery, it was a day filled with natural wonders and delightful discoveries. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're surrounded by such incredible scenery and experiences.
Our day began with an early breakfast at Restaurante El Barranco. I always appreciate starting the day with a hearty meal, especially knowing we'd be spending the day exploring. Elena was particularly excited, chattering about the waterfall and asking a million questions about how tall it was. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, made sure we had enough water and snacks for our adventure. It's these little moments of family togetherness that make these trips so special. I remember growing up in Cholula, my Abuela always made sure we had pan dulce before any excursion – a tradition I happily carry on.
After breakfast, we set off for Cascada de Basaseachi National Park. The drive itself was breathtaking, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Sierra Tarahumara. As we approached the park, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of towering mountains and deep ravines. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city. Despite being December, the weather was mild, perfect for hiking. I had packed layers, knowing that the temperature can fluctuate with the altitude.
Finally, we arrived at Cascada de Basaseachi, Mexico's second-highest waterfall. The sight was simply majestic. The water plunged an impressive 246 meters (853 ft) into the Candameña Canyon, creating a misty spectacle. Elena's eyes widened in amazement, and even Maximilian seemed impressed. We spent a good hour just taking in the view, snapping photos, and feeling the cool spray on our faces. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – to witness the sheer power and beauty of nature.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are the ones that take your breath away, both literally and figuratively.
We decided to hike a bit around the park. The trails were well-maintained, and we enjoyed the diverse flora of the pine-oak forest. It was fascinating to learn that the park has many different microclimates due to the varying elevations. I made a mental note to research the local flora and fauna further; it's something that always piques my interest, harking back to my days studying cultural anthropology. I even managed to identify a Chihuahua White Pine, feeling a small sense of accomplishment. Elena, of course, was more interested in chasing butterflies and collecting colorful leaves.
Lunch was a simple affair – sandwiches and fruit we had packed. We found a scenic spot overlooking the canyon and enjoyed our picnic. It was a perfect opportunity to relax and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings. After lunch, we continued our exploration, discovering hidden viewpoints and enjoying the stunning vistas. The park is truly a gem, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back to Creel. I had heard about Cervecería Copper Lodge, a local brewery known for its craft beers and cozy atmosphere. I thought it would be a perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking. Plus, I was curious to try some local brews; I always enjoy experiencing the local gastronomy.
Cervecería Copper Lodge turned out to be a delightful surprise. The cabin-style hotel had a warm and inviting ambiance. We stepped inside and were greeted by the friendly staff. The aroma of freshly brewed beer and woodsmoke filled the air. We found a spot near the fireplace and ordered a round of beers. I opted for the Porter, while Maximilian tried the Blonde Ale. Elena, of course, had a juice box.
The beers were excellent. My Porter was dark and rich, with a hint of roasted malt. Maximilian enjoyed his Blonde Ale, noting its light and fruity flavor. We also ordered a flatbread pizza with Menonita cheese, which was delicious. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists mingling and chatting. It felt like a true community gathering place.
While enjoying our beers, I struck up a conversation with a local who told me about the history of the brewery and its commitment to using local ingredients. It's always fascinating to learn about the stories behind these places. I also learned about the challenges of running a small brewery in Mexico, battling against the beer monopoly. It reminded me of the entrepreneurial spirit of my ancestors in Cholula.
After a couple of hours at the brewery, we headed back to Restaurante El Barranco for dinner. We were all tired but content. Elena fell asleep almost immediately after finishing her meal. Maximilian and I lingered a bit longer, savoring the last moments of our day.
As I reflect on today, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Copper Canyon with my family. The majestic waterfalls, the stunning landscapes, and the warm hospitality of the locals have created memories that we will cherish forever. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Cañón de Namurachi and visit Artesanías Doña Maty, a local artisan shop. I’m looking forward to discovering more of what this incredible region has to offer. I'm especially excited to pick up some souvenirs at Artesanías Doña Maty, something to remind us of this adventure. I'm hoping to find some traditional Rarámuri crafts; it's a way to support the local community and bring a piece of Copper Canyon back home with us.
Good night from Copper Canyon!
