Discover the magic of Holbox Island! Pristine beaches, delicious cuisine, and vibrant local culture await in this Mexican paradise.
Arrival in Paradise
After a long journey from Bielefeld, Germany, to the sun-kissed shores of Holbox Island, I'm thrilled to finally share my first impressions of this Mexican paradise. The journey itself was an adventure, flying into Cancún and then taking a ferry from Chiquilá. The anticipation was palpable, especially for Elena, who was practically bouncing with excitement. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, made sure we had everything we needed. Holbox has already cast its spell on us, and I can't wait to share every moment of our family adventure.
The ferry ride from Chiquilá offered a tantalizing glimpse of what was to come. The turquoise waters sparkled under the September sun , and the air was thick with the scent of salt and freedom. As we approached the island, the vibrant colors of the buildings lining the shore popped against the white sand. It was a postcard-perfect scene, and I knew we were in for something special.
Our arrival at the Naay Boutique Hotel Holbox was seamless. The hotel is a haven of modern luxury blended with the island's laid-back vibe. The staff greeted us with warm smiles and refreshing drinks, instantly making us feel at home. Elena was particularly taken with the hotel's décor, exclaiming over the colorful murals and comfortable hammocks. Maximilian appreciated the modern amenities, while I was simply relieved to have a comfortable place to unwind after our travels.

After settling in, our first order of business was breakfast at Casa Nostra Roof Restaurant. The rooftop setting provided stunning panoramic views of the island. The gentle breeze and the sound of the waves created a tranquil ambiance. I savored a traditional Mexican breakfast, complete with huevos rancheros and freshly squeezed orange juice. Maximilian opted for a more European-style breakfast, while Elena happily devoured a plate of pancakes. Casa Nostra truly set the tone for a delightful culinary journey.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set out to explore Holbox. The sandy streets were immediately charming, though a bit challenging to navigate with luggage. Golf carts are the main mode of transportation here, adding to the island's unique character. We strolled along the beach, marveling at the crystal-clear water and the soft, white sand. Elena was thrilled to collect seashells, while Maximilian and I simply enjoyed the breathtaking scenery.
For lunch, we ventured to Las Panchas, a local favorite known for its authentic regional cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a testament to its popularity. We shared a variety of dishes, including coconut shrimp, grilled fish with guajillo chili, and octopus ceviche. The flavors were incredible, a true celebration of Mexican gastronomy. Elena, surprisingly, loved the coconut shrimp, a testament to her adventurous palate. The portions were generous, and the prices were very affordable, making it a perfect spot for a family meal.

Holbox is an experience that envelops you, a sensory immersion that leaves you breathless and yearning for more.In the afternoon, we decided to visit the Natural Pier, a picturesque spot that extends into the turquoise waters. The pier offered stunning views of the ocean, and we spent a leisurely hour simply soaking up the sun and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. Elena was fascinated by the marine life, spotting colorful fish and playful dolphins in the distance. The Natural Pier is a perfect place for relaxation and contemplation, a true gem of Holbox.

Before dinner, I wanted to do some shopping. We stopped by the Apollo Design Store, a charming boutique that showcases the creativity and craftsmanship of local artisans. I found several unique handmade items, including a beautiful piece of jewelry and a stylish beach bag. The store's inviting environment made it a pleasure to browse, and I appreciated the opportunity to support local artists. It's wonderful to find souvenirs that are both beautiful and meaningful.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurante Bar and Grill Viva Zapata Isla Holbox for dinner. The restaurant's vibrant atmosphere and colorful murals immediately caught our attention. The staff, dressed in traditional Mexican costumes, were incredibly attentive and welcoming. We enjoyed a delicious meal of fresh seafood, accompanied by traditional sauces and flavorful cocktails. Elena was delighted with her special children's menu, while Maximilian and I savored the authentic Mexican flavors. The restaurant also has live music, which added to the already amazing atmosphere.

The first day of our Holbox adventure was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the island's natural beauty, warm hospitality, and vibrant culture. We enjoyed delicious food, explored charming streets, and created unforgettable memories. As I sit here writing this, I can still feel the sand between my toes and the warmth of the sun on my skin. Holbox has already stolen a piece of my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Speaking of tomorrow, we have an exciting itinerary planned. We'll be visiting the Flamingo viewing sandbar and Isla de los Pajaros, hoping to catch a glimpse of the island's unique wildlife. Breakfast will be at Quartieri Holbox, followed by lunch at Chinicuil Tacos + Mezcal Holbox Restaurant and dinner at Roots Pizzas a la leña Isla Holbox. And, if we have time, we might just sneak in a visit to ALMA Bar for a taste of the island's nightlife. It's going to be another day filled with adventure and discovery!
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy insect repellent and a reusable water bottle tomorrow. It's always the little things you forget! But even without those essentials, today was perfect. Holbox, you have exceeded all expectations!
One thing that struck me today was the amount of events that Holbox has to offer. It looks like there are daily yoga and bootcamp sessions, as well as cooking classes and boat tours. We may have to try to join one of those! Apparently September 15th is Independence Day here, so we may be able to catch some of the festivities.
