A Day of Discovery on Con Son Island

Today was a day of deep exploration and sensory delights on Con Son Island. From historical sites that whispered stories of the past to the vibrant flavors of local cuisine, every moment was a new discovery. I embraced the island's unique charm, creating memories that I know will stay with me long after we leave.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at An Ơi Cafe & Restaurant. This charming spot, known for its fresh, homemade meals and vegan options, was the perfect way to start our explorations. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese coffee, rich and strong, while Maximilian enjoyed a hearty breakfast set. Elena, of course, chose the pancakes, which she declared were the best she’d had so far on our trip. The cafe’s cozy atmosphere, filled with plants and a welcoming vibe, made us feel right at home.

Fueled and ready, we set out to explore Con Son Island. Our first stop was Sở Rẫy, a historical plantation that once served as a source of food for the French colonists and their prisoners. The area is located on a plateau about 210 meters above sea level. Walking through the now-overgrown fields, I couldn’t help but reflect on the island's complex past. It’s a place where you can feel both the beauty of nature and the weight of history. The air was thick with humidity, and the sounds of the jungle surrounded us, creating an immersive experience. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, shared stories he’d read about the plantation's role during the colonial era, adding another layer to our understanding. Elena, surprisingly, was captivated by the monkeys we spotted along the way, their playful antics providing a lighthearted contrast to the somber surroundings.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from confronting the past while embracing the present.

For lunch, we ventured to Nhà hàng Nam Dinh, a restaurant known for its authentic Vietnamese dishes. The restaurant’s open design and elegant décor provided a welcoming space for us to relax and enjoy a delicious meal. I decided to try the seafood hotpot, filled with fresh catches from the local waters, while Maximilian opted for a traditional Hanoi-style noodle dish. Elena, always a fan of seafood, devoured the grilled shrimp. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of spices and fresh ingredients that highlighted the region’s culinary expertise. It was fascinating to taste the distinct culinary influences from different parts of Vietnam, all in one place.

As the afternoon sun began to dip lower, we decided to unwind at the Sea sense bar and grill. This spot came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. Sipping on refreshing cocktails while overlooking the ocean, we watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. Elena, with her boundless energy, built sandcastles on the beach, while Maximilian and I enjoyed a quiet conversation, reflecting on our adventures of the day. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves created a serene atmosphere, a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and reflection.

For dinner, we chose Nhà Hàng Cánh Buồm, a restaurant that came highly recommended for its seafood. The modern and luxurious design of the restaurant impressed us as we stepped inside. We indulged in a feast of fresh seafood, including grilled squid, steamed crab, and a variety of local fish. Each dish was expertly prepared, showcasing the natural flavors of the ingredients. It was a true culinary delight, and we savored every bite.

As we made our way back to our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Con Son Island had offered us a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. As we prepare for our final day tomorrow, I am already anticipating the memories we will create at Six Senses Con Dao, and perhaps picking up a few gifts at Côn Đảo Gift. I am also looking forward to a relaxing breakfast at the Sunset Lounge, lunch at Quán Ăn Tô, and a final dinner at Beach House Restaurant & Cocktails Côn Đảo.

The weather in Con Dao in November is generally pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 23-29°C. Although there may be some rainfall, the humidity is lower, making it a comfortable time to visit. This made our exploration of the island even more enjoyable, as we were able to experience its beauty without being hindered by extreme weather conditions.

Today was a reminder of why we love to travel – to discover new places, immerse ourselves in different cultures, and create lasting memories with our family. Con Son Island, with its rich history and stunning landscapes, has certainly exceeded our expectations. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings as we continue our adventure in the Con Dao Islands.

During our time on Con Son Island, I found myself reflecting on the importance of sustainable tourism. It's crucial that we, as travelers, make conscious choices to support local businesses and preserve the natural environment for future generations. This means opting for eco-friendly accommodations, respecting local customs, and minimizing our impact on the delicate ecosystems we visit. By traveling responsibly, we can ensure that destinations like Con Son Island continue to thrive and inspire for years to come.

One of the things that struck me most about Con Son Island was the resilience of its people. Despite the hardships they have faced throughout history, they have maintained a strong sense of community and a deep connection to their land. It was inspiring to witness their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage and creating a sustainable future for their island. As we interacted with locals, we learned about their traditions, their challenges, and their hopes for the future. These encounters reminded us that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with the people who call those places home.

As I reflect on our day on Con Son Island, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and inspiration. It has reminded me of the importance of responsible travel, cultural immersion, and creating lasting memories with my family. I am excited to continue our adventure in the Con Dao Islands and discover even more of what this incredible destination has to offer.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was when we stumbled upon a local market. The vibrant colors, exotic smells, and lively atmosphere were a feast for the senses. We wandered through the stalls, sampling local delicacies, admiring handcrafted goods, and chatting with the friendly vendors. It was a true immersion into the local culture, and we felt a deep connection to the people and their way of life. Elena, in particular, was fascinated by the colorful fruits and vegetables she had never seen before, and she eagerly tried everything we offered her. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing famous landmarks, but also about experiencing the everyday moments that make a place unique.

As we prepare to leave Con Son Island, I am filled with a mix of emotions. I am sad to say goodbye to this beautiful place, but I am also grateful for the experiences we have had and the memories we have created.
