A Day of Discovery in the Heart of the Sacred Valley
Today was a day of embracing the raw, natural beauty and ancient whispers of the Sacred Valley. Leaving behind the familiar comforts, we ventured into the heart of the valley, seeking out hidden gems and immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Peruvian history and culture. It was a day filled with surprises, both planned and unexpected, and one that I'll cherish for a long time.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Hatuchay Restaurant Craft Beer & Peruvian Cuisine. This place was a delightful surprise, a blend of traditional Peruvian flavors and a modern craft beer sensibility. I opted for a classic Peruvian breakfast of *pan con palta* (bread with avocado) and a strong coffee to kickstart our day. Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried the *tamales*, wrapped in banana leaves – a local delicacy he couldn't resist. Fuelled and ready, we set off to explore the first attraction on our list: Catarata Poc Poc.
The drive to Catarata Poc Poc was an adventure in itself. The road wound its way through the valley, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and patchwork fields. We passed small villages where life seemed to move at a slower pace, women in traditional clothing herding llamas and children playing in the streets. It was a stark reminder of the simple, yet profound, beauty of rural life.
Reaching the trailhead, we laced up our hiking boots and began the trek to the waterfall. The path was initially gentle, meandering through lush vegetation, but soon became steeper and more challenging. The air was thick with the scent of eucalyptus and wildflowers. The sound of rushing water grew louder with each step, heightening our anticipation. I was so glad I remembered my hiking boots; my trusty camera was also at the ready, of course.
After about an hour of hiking, we finally reached Catarata Poc Poc. And what a sight it was! A cascade of crystal-clear water tumbled down a rocky cliff, forming a refreshing pool at its base. The spray from the waterfall created a fine mist that enveloped the area, adding to the magical atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to take a break and soak in the natural beauty around us. Liam, always the daredevil, couldn't resist taking a dip in the icy water. I, on the other hand, was content with capturing the moment through my lens, the vibrant colors and textures begging to be photographed.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
Our next stop was the Qhalispuqyo Ruins, a site shrouded in mystery and history. Unlike the more famous Incan ruins, Qhalispuqyo felt untouched, almost forgotten. As we explored the site, we felt like we were stepping back in time, imagining what life must have been like for the people who once lived there. The stonework was remarkable, a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the Incan builders. Standing there, surrounded by the remnants of a bygone era, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the impermanence of human endeavors and the enduring power of nature.

Lunch was at Sol de Mayo, a restaurant recommended by a local we met on the trail. It was a charming place with a rustic ambiance and a menu filled with traditional Peruvian dishes. We feasted on *trucha frita* (fried trout) and *papas rellenas* (stuffed potatoes), savoring every bite. The food was simple, yet incredibly flavorful, a testament to the quality of the local ingredients. As we ate, we chatted with our fellow diners, sharing stories and travel tips. It was a reminder of the power of food to bring people together, to bridge cultural divides and create lasting connections.

In the late afternoon, we decided to indulge in a local experience and visited SACRED BEER, a local bar. It was a lively spot, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the local brews. We tried a variety of beers, each with its unique flavor profile. The atmosphere was convivial, and we soon found ourselves chatting with a group of fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring, to relax and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the Sacred Valley.

For dinner, we chose Paraqay Restaurante, known for its modern take on traditional Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant was elegant and sophisticated, with a menu that showcased the culinary creativity of the region. I opted for the *lomo saltado* (stir-fried beef), while Liam chose the *ají de gallina* (creamy chicken stew). Both dishes were exquisitely prepared and presented, a feast for both the eyes and the palate. It was a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration, a celebration of the diverse and delicious flavors of Peru.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our experiences. It had been a day of discovery, of embracing the unexpected, and of connecting with the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Sacred Valley. From the breathtaking Catarata Poc Poc to the mysterious Qhalispuqyo Ruins, from the delicious food to the convivial atmosphere of the local bar, every moment had been a gift. I was grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place with Liam, to share in its wonders and create memories that would last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we're heading towards Cusco to visit the Cusco Planetarium and Rodadero. I'm particularly excited about the planetarium, as I've always been fascinated by astronomy. Liam is looking forward to exploring Rodadero, which I hear is a beautiful natural site. We'll also be having breakfast at Qanela Bistro, lunch at Antojitos Urubamba, and dinner at Restaurant Don Kike. And, of course, a visit to Sacred Candle Co. is on the cards – I'm always on the lookout for unique souvenirs to bring back home. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to see what the Sacred Valley has in store for us.
I'm also reminded that I forgot to pack a portable power bank. With all the photos I'm taking, my phone battery is constantly running low. A lightweight rain jacket would have been useful today too, as we experienced a brief shower during our hike. And I definitely need to exchange some currency, as many of the smaller vendors don't accept credit cards. Note to self: be better prepared tomorrow!
