A Final Day of Discovery

As our incredible journey through the Sacred Valley comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the countless memories we've created. Today was a bittersweet mix of exploring the historical heart of Cusco and savoring the last tastes of Peruvian cuisine before heading back to Kelowna. The crisp mountain air, the vibrant culture, and the warmth of the people have all woven a tapestry of experiences I know I'll cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Huaynas Restaurante Campestre. Nestled amidst the rolling hills, the restaurant offered a breathtaking view of the valley as we enjoyed fresh juice, eggs, and local bread. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration in Cusco.

Cusco, a city steeped in history, was calling. Our first stop was the legendary Twelve Angled Stone. Even Liam, who usually isn't as interested in the historical sights, was captivated by the intricate stonework. The precision with which the Incas fit these massive stones together, without the use of mortar, is simply mind-boggling. I snapped a few photos, trying to capture the sheer ingenuity and artistry of this ancient civilization.

We wandered through the charming streets of Cusco, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. The city was buzzing with activity, a mix of locals going about their daily lives and tourists eager to discover its hidden gems. The colonial architecture, built upon the foundations of Inca palaces and temples, creates a unique blend of cultures that is both fascinating and beautiful. I couldn’t help but think about how different this must have been from Cambridge, New Zealand, where I spent my childhood.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences are the ones that leave you with a deep sense of connection to a place and its people.

For lunch, we ventured to Tierra Cocina Artesanal in Urubamba. The restaurant was a delightful discovery, serving up modern interpretations of traditional Peruvian dishes. I opted for the quinoa salad with avocado and grilled vegetables, while Liam enjoyed a hearty alpaca stew. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a testament to the region's rich agricultural heritage. We raised a toast to our incredible journey, grateful for the opportunity to experience the Sacred Valley's culinary delights.

In the afternoon, we visited Wat'a, Cusco, a cultural center showcasing traditional Andean art and crafts. I was particularly drawn to the intricate textiles, woven with vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Each piece told a story, a reflection of the region's rich cultural heritage. I couldn't resist purchasing a small, hand-woven tapestry as a memento of our trip. It will be a beautiful reminder of the Sacred Valley's artistic legacy when we hang it up back in our Kelowna home.

As the sun began to set, we found ourselves at Ukumari Cafe Bar, a cozy spot known for its creative cocktails and lively atmosphere. We sipped on pisco sours, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. From the stunning landscapes to the delicious food and the warm hospitality of the locals, the Sacred Valley had exceeded all our expectations.

For our final dinner, we chose Picanteria Tradicional Mama Cecilia, a local institution known for its authentic Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with families and friends, all eager to savor the traditional flavors of the region. We shared a platter of anticuchos (grilled beef heart skewers) and rocoto relleno (stuffed peppers), enjoying the lively atmosphere and the delicious food. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through the Sacred Valley.

As I sit here tonight, writing this final blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and contentment. This trip to the Sacred Valley has been more than just a vacation; it has been a transformative experience that has deepened my appreciation for the world and its diverse cultures. I've always believed in sustainable travel, and seeing it in action here has been incredibly inspiring. The blend of cultural immersion and outdoor adventure has been exactly what Liam and I needed.

Reflecting on the past ten days, a few moments stand out. Hiking through the Pisac ruins, witnessing the sunrise over Ollantaytambo, and sharing stories with the local artisans are memories I will treasure forever. The Sacred Valley has a way of capturing your heart, of leaving an indelible mark on your soul. I am already dreaming of returning one day, to explore more of its hidden corners and reconnect with its vibrant spirit.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home. While I am excited to return to Kelowna and share our experiences with friends and family, a part of me will always remain in the Sacred Valley. This trip has reminded me of the importance of embracing new cultures, of seeking out authentic experiences, and of living life to the fullest. As a freelance graphic designer, I find inspiration in the colors, textures, and patterns of the places I visit. The Sacred Valley has provided me with a wealth of inspiration that I know will fuel my creativity for months to come.

Thank you for joining me on this incredible journey. I hope that my blog posts have inspired you to explore the Sacred Valley for yourself, to discover its hidden gems, and to create your own unforgettable memories. Until next time, happy travels!

I am so glad I remembered to bring my camera; the food photography opportunities here have been incredible. I’ve also been diligently updating my travel journal, capturing all the little details that I know I’ll want to remember later. Liam has been a great travel partner, always up for anything and willing to try new things. I’m so grateful to have him by my side on these adventures.

As we prepare to leave, I realize I forgot to pack a portable power bank. I’ve been relying on charging my phone whenever we stop at a café or restaurant, but it would have been much more convenient to have a power bank on hand. I also wish I had brought more local currency. While most places accept credit cards, it’s always good to have some cash for smaller purchases and tips. And lastly, a lightweight rain jacket would have been a lifesaver during a few unexpected showers. I’ll be sure to add these items to my packing list for future trips. This trip has been a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, and I can’t wait to see what other destinations await us in the future.
