First Impressions: Ancient Echoes in the Sacred Valley
Today marked the beginning of our adventure in the Sacred Valley, and what a start it was! Stepping off the plane in Cusco and making our way into the valley felt like entering another world, a world steeped in history and brimming with natural beauty. The air is crisp, the landscapes are breathtaking, and the sense of anticipation is palpable. I couldn't wait to dive into the heart of this ancient land and uncover its secrets.
Our first day in the Sacred Valley was nothing short of magical. After a long journey from Kelowna, with a layover in Lima and a connecting flight to Cusco, Liam and I, along with the family, were eager to stretch our legs and immerse ourselves in the local culture. The drive from Cusco to the Sacred Valley was an experience in itself. The scenery transformed from bustling cityscapes to rolling hills dotted with traditional villages and terraced fields. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe as we ascended into the Andes, the air getting crisper with every turn. It reminded me of road trips back in New Zealand, where every corner revealed a new vista more stunning than the last.
Our first stop was Tambomachay, often referred to as the 'Bath of the Inca'. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this ancient site is a marvel of Incan hydraulic engineering. The precision with which the stones were carved and fitted together to create a network of aqueducts and fountains was astounding. The water flowed continuously, even now, centuries after its construction, a testament to the ingenuity of the Inca people. It was easy to imagine the Inca elite performing rituals and ceremonies here, connecting with the sacred element of water. The tranquility of the place was captivating, and I felt a deep sense of connection to the past.

The Sacred Valley whispers stories of a civilization that revered nature and engineered wonders.
Next on our itinerary was Saqsaywaman, a massive fortress overlooking Cusco. The sheer scale of the site was overwhelming. The enormous stones, some weighing over 100 tons, were fitted together with such precision that not even a knife blade could fit between them. How the Incas managed to transport and assemble these stones without the aid of modern technology is a mystery that continues to baffle archaeologists. As we walked among the ruins, I couldn't help but marvel at the skill and determination of the Incan builders. Liam, ever the history enthusiast, was particularly fascinated by the defensive strategies employed at Saqsaywaman. He kept pointing out the strategic placement of the walls and the commanding views of the surrounding landscape.

After a morning of exploring ancient ruins, our stomachs were beginning to rumble. We drove to Urubamba for lunch at El Huacatay, a restaurant recommended for its modern Peruvian dishes with locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant was tucked away in a jasmine-scented garden, creating a tranquil and inviting atmosphere. We started with some traditional Peruvian appetizers, including causa and rocoto rellenos, which were bursting with flavor. For the main course, I opted for the grilled trout, while Liam chose the lomo saltado. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of sightseeing.

In the afternoon, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Boutique Jazmin Handicraft store. I love discovering unique, locally made crafts, and this store did not disappoint. From colorful textiles to intricate ceramics, there was a treasure trove of beautiful items to admire. I picked up a few hand-woven scarves as souvenirs, and Liam found a beautifully carved wooden mask that he couldn't resist. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was happy to find such a wonderful place to do so.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Tres Keros for dinner. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic ambiance, with a fireplace crackling in the corner. We started with some pisco sours, a classic Peruvian cocktail, before diving into the menu. I decided to try the alpaca steak, while Liam went for the lamb shank. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and infused with local flavors. The service was attentive, and the overall atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end our first day in the Sacred Valley.

Reflecting on the day, I feel an immense sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place. The Sacred Valley is a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty, and I can't wait to explore more of it in the days to come. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Maras and Morada De Los Dioses, and I'm already excited to see what wonders await us. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at the GREEN BAR VALLE SAGRADO after a day of exploration.
I did realize I forgot to pack a portable power bank! With all the photos and videos I'm planning to take, I'll definitely need it to keep my devices charged. And, of course, a lightweight rain jacket would have been useful, considering the unpredictable mountain weather. Note to self: double-check the essentials list next time!
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can hear the sounds of the night coming alive. The air is filled with the chirping of crickets and the distant hooting of owls. It's a reminder that we are far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, immersed in the tranquility of nature. I'm excited for what tomorrow holds and eager to continue our journey through this enchanting valley.
The blend of ancient history and the vibrant culture here in the Sacred Valley is intoxicating. It's a reminder of the ingenuity and resilience of the human spirit, and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. Good night from the Sacred Valley!
