A Day of Patagonian Heights

Today was a day of reaching for the sky, both literally and figuratively. Torres del Paine has a way of making you feel small yet incredibly alive, a sensation I embraced fully as I tackled two iconic viewpoints: Glaciar Tenerife and Mirador Británico. The crisp air, the stunning vistas, and the sheer physical challenge made for an unforgettable day of solo exploration.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hosteria Pehoe. The reviews I'd read mentioned the breakfast being quite good, and I was not disappointed. Fuelled up and ready, I set off towards the trails. The weather in Torres del Paine in May is definitely something to prepare for. It was chilly, around 4°C (39°F), and there was a chance of rain or snow. I layered up, making sure my weatherproof jacket was easily accessible. The park in May is quieter, which I appreciated, even though some services might be reduced.

The first stop was Glaciar Tenerife. The trek to the glacier was invigorating. The landscape was rugged and raw, the kind that makes you feel like you're on another planet. The glacier itself was a sight to behold, a river of ice snaking down the mountain. I spent a good amount of time simply taking it all in, the silence broken only by the occasional creak of the ice. It's moments like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to immerse myself completely in the experience, without distraction.

After soaking in the glacial views, it was time to head towards Mirador Británico. I grabbed lunch at Refugio Laguna Amarga. The reviews mentioned that the food service could be variable , but I found it to be perfectly adequate for a midday refuel. With renewed energy, I continued my trek.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

The trail to Mirador Británico, starting from Campamento Italiano, is about 8 miles round trip. It's considered a moderately difficult hike with some steep sections. The total elevation gain is around 2,568 feet. I found the hike challenging but manageable. The views along the way were incredible, a constant reminder of the park's majestic beauty. The trail winds through the French Valley, and the panoramic views kept me motivated.

Reaching Mirador Británico was an absolute triumph. The 360-degree view was simply breathtaking. Granite peaks, glaciers, and forests stretched out in every direction. I could see the Paine Massif in all its glory, a truly awe-inspiring sight. I spent a long time at the top, just absorbing the scenery and feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty.

The descent was tough on the knees, but the stunning views made it bearable. I made it back to the trailhead just as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was the perfect end to an incredible day.

For dinner, I decided to try Hostería El Pionero. It was a bit of a drive, but I'd heard good things about the food. I wasn't disappointed. The meal was hearty and satisfying, the perfect way to celebrate a day of conquering peaks. The Hostería is located on the route between Torres del Paine National Park and the border between Chile and Argentina. It has a tranquil setting and good structure. Some reviews mentioned limited dining options , but I found the meal to be quite enjoyable.

Before heading back, I made a quick stop at Patagoniawool | Premium 100% Natural Wool. I wanted to pick up a little something to remind me of my trip. As a graphic designer, I appreciate quality materials, and the idea of having a 100% natural wool item appealed to my love for sustainable living. I ended up buying a beautiful skein of merino wool yarn, perfect for a future knitting project.

As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Today was a test of physical endurance, but it was also a reminder of the incredible beauty that exists in this world. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to experience it firsthand.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Mirador Lago Grey and Guarderia Grey. I might also stop by Pampa Lodge- Refugio- Quincho y Caballos for a drink. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and adventure in this stunning national park.

This trip has been an incredible experience so far. Traveling solo has allowed me to fully immerse myself in the beauty of Torres del Paine. The solitude has given me time to reflect and appreciate the natural world around me. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. I'm also missing Liam and our cozy life back in Kelowna, but I know this experience will make me an even better travel blogger and graphic designer.

The thought of cozying up back home with Liam and knitting something from my newly acquired merino wool is a comforting one. But for now, I'm content to be here, in this moment, surrounded by the majestic beauty of Patagonia.

I'm also making a mental note to buy a portable phone charger and extra memory cards when I get back to Kelowna. These are definitely trip essentials I should not have forgotten [TripDetails].
