Cultural Escapade in Hoi An: A Journey Through Time
Day 12: A River Runs Through It: Discovering Hoi An's Soul
Exploring Hoi An's heart: a day of river cruises, ancient streets, and culinary delights with Erika in this charming Vietnamese town.
Hoi An's Enduring Charm
Today, Erika and I truly immersed ourselves in the timeless beauty of Hoi An. From a tranquil river journey to savoring local flavors, it was a day filled with the kind of experiences that etch themselves into your memory. It felt like stepping back in time, wandering through streets that have witnessed centuries of history, and I couldn't help but feel a deep connection to this place.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Secret Garden Hoian. Tucked away in a little laneway, this restaurant was indeed a hidden gem. As we stepped inside, it felt like entering a different world – a peaceful oasis away from the bustling streets. The open-air setting, with lush greenery and a tranquil fish pond, created a serene atmosphere. It was the perfect way to start our day. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, while Erika chose a familiar Western dish. We both agreed that the food was delicious, and the ambiance was simply magical. It reminded me of the tranquil gardens back in Heidelberg, a little piece of home away from home.
After breakfast, we decided to explore the Thu Bồn River. The river is the lifeblood of Hoi An, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. We hopped on a traditional boat for a leisurely cruise. The gentle rocking of the boat, combined with the stunning scenery, was incredibly relaxing. As we glided along the water, we passed by colorful houses, ancient temples, and bustling markets. The river was alive with activity, and it was fascinating to watch the locals going about their daily lives. Erika, ever the observant one, pointed out the intricate details of the boats and the unique architecture along the riverbanks. The weather in January is quite pleasant, with average temperatures fluctuating between 19°C and 25°C. The light rain we experienced only added to the charm, creating a mystical atmosphere over the water.

The river isn't just a geographical feature; it's the vein that carries the lifeblood of Hoi An, connecting its past with its present.
Our river journey eventually led us to Phố cổ Hội An - lối vào chính, the main entrance to the ancient town. Stepping onto solid ground, we were immediately transported back in time. The ancient town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's easy to see why. The streets are lined with well-preserved buildings that reflect a blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese architectural styles. Lanterns adorned every corner, adding a touch of magic to the already enchanting atmosphere. We strolled hand-in-hand, marveling at the intricate details of the buildings and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

For lunch, we chose Mr. Sơn Restaurant, a local favorite known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I decided to try Cao lầu, a local noodle dish that's unique to Hoi An. The noodles were thick and chewy, and the broth was rich and flavorful. Erika opted for the classic Banh mi, a Vietnamese sandwich that's become famous around the world. We both savored every bite, appreciating the fresh ingredients and the skillful preparation. It reminded me of some of the small family restaurants I used to visit in Kyoto, where the food was simple but incredibly delicious.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Madam Kieu Vietnamese Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is known for its elegant ambiance and its stunning views of the Thu Bon River. We secured a table on the balcony, overlooking the water. As darkness fell, the town came alive with lights. Lanterns glowed in every color imaginable, creating a magical spectacle. We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Vietnamese dishes, accompanied by live music. The atmosphere was romantic and festive, and it was the perfect way to end our day.

After dinner, we decided to check out Woop Woop Bar for a nightcap. This bar is known for its relaxed atmosphere and its friendly staff. We sat in the garden, sipping on our drinks and chatting about our day. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on all the amazing experiences we had shared. I must admit, the allure of a quiet drink and Erika's charming company was much more appealing than the lively music scene, especially after a long day of exploration.

As we walked back to our hotel, Hai Au Boutique Hotel & Spa, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Hoi An has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. The blend of history, culture, and natural beauty is simply irresistible. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Chùa Pháp Bảo and Khu Dệt Chiếu Kim Bồng - KIM BONG TRADITIONAL MAT WEAVING. I am particularly keen to see the traditional mat weaving, as the craftsmanship reminds me of the artistry in antique Japanese textiles.
