Day 7: Cosmic Wonders and Harbour Charms: A Day Exploring Sydney's Heights
Discover Sydney's celestial side at the Observatory, explore Barangaroo Reserve, hike in the National Park, and indulge in fine dining.
Sydney's High Life: Stars, Parks, and Culinary Delights
Today was all about experiencing Sydney from different vantage points, both literally and figuratively. From stargazing at the Sydney Observatory to wandering through the urban oasis of Barangaroo Reserve and hiking in the Sydney Harbour National Park, it was a day packed with diverse experiences that offered a unique perspective on this vibrant city. And of course, no day is complete without indulging in some of Sydney's finest culinary offerings.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Carte. I opted for the classic eggs benedict, while my friends chose the shakshuka, a dish Élodie often makes at home. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. As we savored our meal, we discussed our plans for the day, excitement bubbling in the air.
Our first stop was the Sydney Observatory. Nestled atop Observatory Hill, this historic site offers a fascinating glimpse into Australia's astronomical past. As a software developer with a keen interest in technology and history, I was particularly excited about this visit. The Observatory, built in 1858, played a crucial role in timekeeping, meteorology, and of course, astronomy. We joined a guided tour that took us through the Observatory's fascinating history. Our guide shared captivating stories about the astronomers who dedicated their lives to mapping the stars and understanding the cosmos. We learned about Henry Chamberlain Russell, the government astronomer who put Sydney on the international map with his work on the International Astrographic Catalogue.
The tour took us inside the Signal Master's Cottage and the Observatory wing, where we explored unique artifacts from the Powerhouse Collection. Climbing the narrow staircases to the astronomy domes was an adventure in itself. Inside, we marveled at Australia's oldest working telescope alongside a modern 16-inch telescope. Unfortunately, it was daytime, so we couldn't observe any celestial bodies, but the guide showed us simulations and explained what we could see on a clear night. The views of Sydney Harbour from the Observatory were breathtaking, offering a unique perspective of the city skyline. It was easy to imagine the astronomers of the past, gazing at the same harbor while charting the stars.

The universe is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.
Leaving the Observatory, we made our way to Barangaroo Reserve, a stunning waterfront park that was once a bustling industrial site. The transformation is remarkable. The Reserve is a testament to thoughtful urban planning and environmental restoration. As we strolled through the park, we admired the native plants and the beautifully landscaped gardens. The views of the harbor were equally impressive, offering a different perspective than from Observatory Hill. I thought about Élodie and how she would appreciate the landscaping, given her creative spirit. Barangaroo Reserve is not just a pretty face; it's also a significant site for the Gadigal people, the traditional owners of this land. The park's design incorporates Aboriginal cultural elements, and we learned about the area's rich indigenous history.

It was interesting to learn that Vivid Sydney, an annual light festival, often features installations at Barangaroo Reserve. While we're a bit early for the festival, which usually takes place in May and June, I could already imagine the park transformed into a dazzling display of light and art. I made a mental note to check it out if I ever visit Sydney during that time.
After a morning of exploration, it was time for lunch. We headed to O Bar and Dining, a revolving restaurant atop Australia Square. The views from the 47th floor were simply incredible. As the restaurant slowly rotated, we were treated to a 360-degree panorama of Sydney. The Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and the sprawling cityscape unfolded before our eyes. It was like dining inside a postcard.

The food at O Bar and Dining was as impressive as the views. I started with the seared wagyu blade, which was incredibly tender and flavorful. My friends opted for the seafood dishes, which they raved about. For dessert, I couldn't resist the passionfruit and chocolate bonbon souffle. It was the perfect ending to a memorable lunch.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off to explore the Sydney Harbour National Park. This vast park encompasses numerous islands and foreshore areas around the harbor, offering a diverse range of activities. We chose a hiking trail that wound along the coast, passing through lush bushland and rocky cliffs. The views of the harbor were simply stunning. The air was fresh and clean, and the only sounds were the gentle lapping of the waves and the chirping of birds. The park is rich in history, with convict-built structures, military fortifications, and Aboriginal sites scattered throughout. As we hiked, we came across several historical landmarks, including old gun emplacements and lookout points. It was fascinating to imagine the soldiers who once stood guard here, protecting Sydney from potential invaders.

One of the highlights of our hike was a secluded beach we discovered along the way. The water was crystal clear, and the sand was soft and white. We couldn't resist taking a dip, even though the water was a bit chilly. Swimming in Sydney Harbour with the city skyline in the background was an unforgettable experience.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to the city, tired but exhilarated. We had one more stop planned for the evening: The Swinging Cat, a New Orleans-inspired bar in the heart of Sydney's CBD. This hidden gem is known for its classic cocktails, comfort food, and live jazz music. As a fan of both history and a good drink, I was eager to check it out. Finding the entrance was a bit of an adventure in itself. We had to descend a set of stairs tucked away next to a Subway restaurant. But once we stepped inside, we were transported to another world. The dimly lit bar was decorated with plush lounges, vintage posters, and quirky artwork. The air was filled with the sounds of smooth jazz and the clinking of glasses.

I ordered a Sazerac, the bar's signature cocktail. It was a potent mix of cognac, absinthe, sugar, and bitters, with a deliciously aniseed-based scent. My friends tried some of the other NOLA classics, like the Hurricane and the Vieux Carre. We also shared some of the bar's famous mac 'n' cheese balls, which were the perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring.
The Swinging Cat had a wonderfully charming service. The bartenders were knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, and they made us feel right at home. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on our day of adventures. As the evening drew to a close, we reluctantly made our way back to the YEHS Hotel Sydney Harbour Suites. It had been a day of contrasts, from the cosmic wonders of the Observatory to the urban oasis of Barangaroo Reserve and the natural beauty of Sydney Harbour National Park. And of course, the culinary delights along the way had made it all the more memorable.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the northern beaches, including Avalon Beach and Palm Beach, and hike in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this amazing city.
As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about Élodie and how much she would have enjoyed today's adventures. I made a mental note to bring her back to Sydney someday so we could experience it together.
