Exploring the Majestic Copper Canyon with Friends
Day 3: A Day of Fertility and Flavors in Copper Canyon
Exploring the mystical Valle de la Fertilidad, savoring local cuisine at Restaurante El Barranco, and enjoying a nightcap at La Taberna Del Abuelo.
Whispers of the Canyon
Today was a day of exploration, both of the land and of local traditions. As I continue my journey through Copper Canyon with my friends, I find myself more and more captivated by the raw beauty and rich culture that surrounds us. It’s a privilege to experience this corner of Mexico, and I’m excited to share the day’s adventures.
The morning began, as most mornings here do, with an eager anticipation of the unknown. After a hearty breakfast at Restaurante El Barranco, where the views were as satisfying as the *huevos rancheros*, we set off to explore the Valle de la Fertilidad.

The air was crisp, a typical November morning, and the sun was just beginning to peek over the canyon walls, casting long shadows that danced across the landscape. I made sure to pack my camera, hoping to capture the essence of this unique place. Elodie would have loved this, she always appreciates the way the morning light transforms a landscape. I made a mental note to show her all the photos I took today.
The Valle de la Fertilidad, or Fertility Valley, is known for its unique rock formations, one of which is particularly famous – the Piedra de la Fertilidad. Our local guide told us stories of the Rarámuri people and their beliefs surrounding this phallic-shaped rock. It's said that the Rarámuri dance around it during festivals, believing that it brings virility to men and fertility to women. I kept a respectful distance, more interested in the cultural significance than any personal effects. It was fascinating to learn about the traditions of the indigenous people who have called this canyon home for centuries.
The land whispers secrets to those who listen.
After exploring the valley, we headed back to Restaurante El Barranco for lunch. It’s quickly becoming our go-to spot, not just for the food, but for the stunning panoramic views of the Copper Canyon. I decided to try the *Guisado de Abigeo*, a regional stew, while my friends opted for the *Deshebrada Serrana*. Each dish was a burst of local flavors, and we savored every bite as we soaked in the scenery. The restaurant itself is perched perfectly to offer an amazing view. I made sure to take a bunch of pictures, so I could share them later on my blog. I think my readers would appreciate the scenery.
As the afternoon waned, we decided to take it easy and enjoy the slower pace of life here. We spent some time relaxing, sharing stories, and simply enjoying each other's company. It's moments like these that make traveling with friends so special. It reminds me of the times I spent with my childhood friends back in Reims, reminiscing about old times while creating new memories.
For dinner, we, unsurprisingly, returned to Restaurante El Barranco. This time, I tried the *Asado de Puerco*, which was absolutely amazing. The pork was tender and flavorful, and the spices were perfectly balanced. After dinner, we ventured out to La Taberna Del Abuelo, a local bar known for its rustic charm and friendly atmosphere.

It reminded me of some of the old bars back in France, the kind of place where everyone knows your name. I ordered a local beer, and we all shared stories and laughter with the locals. The bar has been around since 1908, and it's clear that it's a beloved institution in the community. It felt like stepping back in time, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The bar was dimly lit, with vintage decorations adorning the walls. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
The evening was filled with music and camaraderie. I even tried my hand at a game of *futbolin* (table football), though my skills were definitely lacking. My friends and I laughed as we fumbled our way through the game, making memories that we'll cherish for years to come. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for this experience. Copper Canyon has a way of capturing your heart and soul. The landscape is breathtaking, the culture is rich, and the people are warm and welcoming. It's a place that I'll never forget, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Parque Nacional Cañon de Santa Elena [ITINERARY OF TOMORROW]. I've heard that it offers even more stunning views of the canyon, and I'm eager to explore its hiking trails. Before heading there, we will, of course, have breakfast at Restaurante El Barranco [ITINERARY OF TOMORROW], to start the day off right. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Artesanías Doña Maty [ITINERARY OF TOMORROW] to take back home to Élodie and my friends in Montreal.
I'm also realizing that I forgot to pack a portable phone charger and a first-aid kit [TripEssentialsForgotten]. I'll have to pick those up tomorrow. For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure.
The Copper Canyon is more than just a destination; it's an experience that stays with you long after you've left. It's a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world, and it's a testament to the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit.
Until tomorrow,
Thomas
