A Day of Awe and Refreshment

Today marked the beginning of our Copper Canyon adventure, and what a start it was! The raw beauty of this place is already captivating me, and I know this trip with my friends will be one for the books. From cascading waterfalls to locally crafted beers, every moment was a sensory delight.

Our day began with an early breakfast at Restaurante El Barranco. Fuelled up with traditional Mexican fare, we set off to explore the Cascada de Basaseachi National Park.

The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads offering glimpses of the vast canyon landscape. As we approached the park, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. It was a welcome change from the city air of Montreal. I couldn't help but think of Élodie back home, probably experimenting with a new pastry recipe. I made a mental note to bring her back some local ingredients; she'd love that.

The Cascada de Basaseachi is Mexico's second-highest waterfall, plummeting 246 meters into the canyon below. The hike down to the falls was exhilarating. The trail was steep, but the views were more than worth the effort. The landscape is populated with pine and oak trees. The sound of the cascading water grew louder with each step, building anticipation for the grand reveal. Finally, we reached the viewpoint, and there it was – a breathtaking curtain of water against the backdrop of the rugged canyon walls. I spent a good hour snapping photos, trying to capture the sheer scale and beauty of the falls. It’s one thing to see pictures, but experiencing it in person is something else entirely. The power of nature is truly humbling.

It is a place where you feel the immensity of the landscape, and it reminds you of your own insignificance, but in a good way.

After soaking in the views and the refreshing mist, we hiked back up, our legs burning but our spirits high. We rewarded ourselves with lunch back at Restaurante El Barranco. I savored the flavors of the region, enjoying a hearty meal while overlooking the canyon. The restaurant itself is quite the experience, offering panoramic views of the Copper Canyon. Some sections even have glass floors, adding an extra thrill to the dining experience. I opted for a ‘Guisado de Abigeo’, a regional dish, while my friends tried the ‘Deshebrada Serrana’. We shared stories and laughter, reliving our favorite moments from the hike.

As the day wound down, we decided to check out Cervecería Copper Lodge in Creel.

I had heard about their craft beers, and as a fan of local brews, I was eager to give them a try. The brewery had a cozy, cabin-like atmosphere, perfect for relaxing after a day of adventure. We sampled a few of their beers, including the Porter, the Rubia Ale, and the Pies Ligeros. Each had its unique flavor profile, reflecting the local ingredients and brewing techniques. My personal favorite was the Porter, with its dark, roasted notes. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. Sipping on the beer, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. This was exactly the kind of trip I needed – a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature and friends.

Before heading back, we chatted with some locals at the bar, learning about the history and culture of the Copper Canyon. The people here are incredibly warm and welcoming, eager to share their stories and traditions. It’s these interactions that truly enrich the travel experience, adding depth and meaning to the landscapes we explore.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Cañón de Namurachi [sic] [Cañón de Namúrachi], another natural wonder in the region. I'm excited to see what new adventures and discoveries await us. I'm also hoping to pick up some Raramuri handicrafts at the Raramuri Tienda de Artesanías [sic] to bring back home. It's always nice to have a tangible reminder of the places I've visited, and Élodie always appreciates a unique souvenir.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore the Copper Canyon with my friends. It’s a reminder that life is about more than just work and deadlines. It’s about experiencing the beauty of the world, connecting with people, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

And as a final note, I really need to remember to pack a portable phone charger and a first-aid kit next time! Running out of battery while trying to capture the perfect waterfall shot was a rookie mistake, and a small cut on the trail reminded me that safety should always come first.

Until tomorrow, adios from Copper Canyon!
