Pompeii Archaeological Park

Pompeii (/pɒmˈpeɪi/) was an ancient Roman city near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Many of the inhabitants were also buried before they could escape.

We booked the trip without a ticket and without a guide. The driver Pino picked us up in a black Mercedes van exactly on time as it was promised. After 1.5 hr drive he made a stop in a gas station where we could have coffee and pastries. Then we continued to Pompeii and he showed us where to buy a ticket and gave us 2hrs to explore the ruins. It wasn’t enough time to see everything but at least we saw the main parts, including the volcano victims in the museum. Then we headed to the coast and Positano city (driver gave us 2hrs to explore) and despite the constant rain the experience was amazing!! We had lunch at the beach, the restaurant was very pricy though. After lunch we had enough time to explore the shops and buy souvenirs. Pino was very friendly and always on time to pick us up and meet us at meeting point!! If I wouldn’t have travelled with my family, who don’t speak English, I would have paid for a guide in Pompeii, to navigate us quicker through the ruins.

A wonderful day with our guide Fabio! He picked me up from the hotel around 5 am and then picked up one other group of passengers, and our day started. We were a total of 5 people, I think. Fabio drove us to Pampei, where there was a different tour guide who walked us through the ruins. Then, Fabio took us to the Amalfi Coast and Positano. We had a little bit of personal time in Positano, which allowed us to walk around or eat. Then, Fabio drove us back to Rome. It was a very nice day and Fabio was showing us spors for fotos or gave some interesting facts.

We loved our trip! It started out with the best driver Fabio who went above and beyond to make our trip an unforgettable one. Fabio took special care of me who couldn’t go down the steep way to the beach in Positano and when he saw that I didn’t go all the way down came back up to find me and keep me company, I really appreciated that and was thankful that he would do that. He made special stops and pointed out things and even bought all of us tangerines and candy and took pictures. Definitely made our day and will hire him again in our next trip in a few months.

The driver on this small private tour was constantly typing and checking messages while driving. It was very unsafe constantly taking eyes off the road. The tour was not guided except in Pompeii where after a 3 hour car journey we were told we had to wait 1.5 hours in the waiting room for the guide. Eventually after complaining it was 45 minutes. After another 2 hour drive we arrived in Positano where almost everything was closed. A real rip off. Make your own way from Rome to pompeii
