Getting There

  • Driving

    From Interstate 10, take Exit 17A to Dauphin Island. Follow AL-193 South. The Alabama Aquarium is located 2 miles on the left after turning left at the water tower on Bienville Boulevard. Parking is free.

  • Ferry

    Visitors can take the Mobile Bay Ferry from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island. From the ferry landing on Dauphin Island, the aquarium is a short drive east on Bienville Boulevard. Ferry schedules and details are available online.

The Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) invites visitors to explore the diverse aquatic ecosystems of coastal Alabama. Formerly known as the Estuarium, the aquarium serves as a public outreach facility for the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Alabama's primary marine education and research center. The aquarium highlights four key habitats: the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands, and the Northern Gulf of Mexico. Exhibits feature a variety of species, from alligators and turtles in the Delta exhibit to rays, sharks, and jellyfish in the Gulf of Mexico exhibit. A 7,000-gallon stingray touch pool allows visitors to interact with marine life. Interactive exhibits offer hands-on learning experiences for all ages. Visitors can explore a living marsh boardwalk and participate in educational programs and excursions. The aquarium also hosts Boardwalk Talks, providing insights into DISL research and community awareness. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab itself was established in 1971 and has been renovated since then. It is located on the eastern end of Dauphin Island, next to historic Fort Gaines.
