Discover more about Swift-Coles Historic Home

Nestled on the banks of the Bon Secour River, the Swift-Coles Historic Home, also known as the Tidewater Mansion, offers a unique window into coastal Alabama's past. The story began in 1882, when Thomas Gavin, a local Creole fisherman, constructed a modest four-room dog-trot cabin. In 1898, Charles and Susan Swift, who owned a successful lumber business, purchased the home. The Swifts transformed the cabin into a sprawling sixteen-room mansion, a testament to their prosperity. The family expanded the home in 1902 and 1908, incorporating Gulf Coast vernacular and Creole Cottage architectural styles. The home features large windows and raised ceilings for air circulation, reflecting the style of the early 20th century. After the last Swift family member passed away in 1976, Nicholas Coles, an entrepreneur and antique collector, bought the home and filled it with antiques from his world travels. In 2007, Coles bequeathed the home to the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission, who opened it to the public in 2009. Today, visitors can explore the home's rich history and admire its unique architecture and antique furnishings. The property also includes four original outbuildings: a corn crib, chicken house, barn, and outhouse. The Swift-Coles Historic Home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
