Discover more about Monte Sano Giant Cross (74 ft.)

The Monte Sano Giant Cross is more than just a landmark; it's a testament to Huntsville's history and the collaborative spirit of its people. Erected in 1963, during a time of civil unrest, the cross was a joint effort by local churches, businesses, and individuals from diverse backgrounds, aiming to represent Huntsville as a city balanced in peace and faith. The cross replaced a smaller wooden cross that had stood on Monte Sano since around 1900. Designed by architect Dick Dickson, who also contributed to the designs of Huntsville City Hall and the Von Braun Civic Center, the new cross was an ambitious undertaking. The 38-ton structure was built in sections using pre-stressed steel and concrete blocks, then transported to its location on Round Top Mountain with the help of Redstone Arsenal. Marbleized chips encrust the surface, designed to reflect the light and make it visible from afar. Today, the Monte Sano Giant Cross continues to inspire visitors. It's accessible via the scenic and handicap-accessible Rock Bluff Trail, which starts near Burritt on the Mountain. The site offers panoramic views of Huntsville and the surrounding Tennessee Valley. The cross stands as a reminder of unity and the enduring strength of faith.
