    From downtown Huntsville, take Governors Drive (Highway 431) east towards Monte Sano Mountain. Follow Governors Drive for approximately 4 miles, then turn left onto Monte Sano Boulevard. Continue for about 2.5 miles, then turn right onto Nolen Avenue SE, which leads directly into Monte Sano State Park. Follow the signs within the park to reach the North Plateau area. Expect to pay a daily entrance fee of $5 per adult (ages 12+), $2 for children (ages 4-11) and seniors (62+). Parking is available at the Hiker's Trailhead or near the Monte Sano Lodge.

    While public transportation directly to Monte Sano State Park is limited, you can take a Huntsville city bus to a nearby location along Governors Drive and then use a taxi or ride-sharing service (Uber/Lyft) to complete the journey to the park entrance on Nolen Avenue. The name 'Monte Sano,' meaning 'Mountain of Health' in Spanish, reflects the area's past as a popular health retreat in the late 1800s, where visitors sought respite in the mountain's fresh air and mineral springs. In its heyday, Monte Sano was home to the grand Hotel Monte Sano, a luxurious three-story resort that hosted guests from across the United States, including notable figures like Helen Keller and the Vanderbilts. The hotel offered various amusements, including bowling, horseback riding, and lawn tennis. A railway line once transported guests up the steep slopes. While the hotel eventually closed and was later demolished, the allure of Monte Sano endured. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) transformed the area into a state park, leaving behind rustic structures, including cabins, a lodge, and an amphitheater, all built in the distinctive Arts and Crafts style. Today, Monte Sano North Plateau is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering over 20 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of biking trails. The North Plateau Loop trail provides easy access to many of the park's trails, scenic overlooks, and historical landmarks, including the Von Braun Astronomical Society's planetarium and observatory.
