Discover more about Jackson Lake Island

Jackson Lake Island, a hidden gem nestled on the Alabama River near Millbrook, offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and cinematic history. This 60-acre island is best known as the location for the 'Town of Spectre' from Tim Burton's beloved film, 'Big Fish'. In 2003, Tim Burton transformed the island into the enchanting town of Spectre, and the movie set was intentionally designed to look timeworn and slightly eerie. After filming wrapped, the set remained, and over the years, the buildings have weathered, adding to the town's ghostly charm. Walking through Spectre feels like stepping back in time, with moss-draped trees and dilapidated facades creating a surreal experience. Visitors can still see the remains of Jenny's house, marked by four plaster columns near the lake's edge. A quirky tradition has emerged where visitors toss their shoes onto a line, adding to the island's unique character. Today, the 'Town of Spectre' is inhabited by a large herd of free-roaming goats. These friendly creatures have become a beloved part of the island's identity, often seen wandering through the streets of Spectre. Visitors are welcome to interact with the goats, offering scratches behind the ears and capturing memorable photos. Beyond the movie set, Jackson Lake Island offers a range of outdoor activities. Anglers can launch boats or fish from the bank, with bass, crappie, bream, and catfish commonly found in the lake. The protected waters provide an ideal place to paddle a canoe or kayak. Camping is also popular, with several campsites available. Picnic tables and grills are scattered throughout the island, offering comfortable spots to relax and take in the views. The island wasn't always an island. Purchased in 1970, the construction of a nearby dam led to rising water levels, transforming the area into Jackson Lake Island. The Bright family has owned and operated the island since 2014, preserving the movie set and welcoming visitors to experience its magic.
