Discover more about Municipal Park

Opelika Municipal Park, affectionately called Monkey Park by locals, has been a central part of Opelika's community since its opening in 1955. The park's origins trace back to 1951 when the Opelika Board of Parks and Recreation hired W.J. "Bill" Calhoun as its first director, with a vision to transform a wooded area into a recreational haven. Generous land donations from I.J. Scott, Sr. and Winston Smith T, Sr. made this vision a reality. The park quickly became a beloved spot, thanks to attractions like the Rocky Brook Rocket, a miniature train that has delighted visitors since its early days. For a small fee, currently $1 per person, visitors can enjoy a ride on the train. From 1956 to 1980, the park was also home to a "Monkey Village," housing spider monkeys that became a popular attraction, hence the enduring nickname. Today, Opelika Municipal Park offers a variety of activities and amenities. Children can enjoy the playgrounds, while families can gather for picnics. The park also features the Salem-Shotwell Covered Bridge, relocated to the park in 2007 and maintained by the Opelika Kiwanis Club and the City of Opelika. Throughout the year, the park hosts events such as the Summer Swing Concert Series, and Garden in the Park.
