Fendall Hall: A Step Back in Time

Fendall Hall, located in Eufaula, Alabama, is a beautifully preserved example of Italianate architecture, completed in 1860 for Edward Young, a prominent merchant and cotton broker. The house remained in the Young family for five generations, until it was purchased by the Alabama Historical Commission in 1973. Today, it operates as a house museum, meticulously restored to reflect the period of 1880-1916, offering visitors a captivating glimpse into the lives of a prominent Southern family.The exterior of Fendall Hall retains its original Italianate design, characterized by wide eaves, brackets, and a welcoming veranda. Inside, visitors are greeted by elaborate and rare interior decorative paintings dating from the 1880s, considered among the finest examples in the country. These stunning murals adorn the entrance hall, parlor, and dining room, showcasing the artistic tastes of the era. The house also features original family furnishings, marble mantles, and a black and white marble tiled entry.Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Fendall Hall also demonstrates innovative functionality for its time. An ornamental medallion ceiling grille on the second floor facilitated ventilation, while a cistern in the attic supplied water for the home's indoor plumbing system, one of the first in the state.
