Llixhat e Bënjës: Albania's Natural Thermal Oasis

Llixhat e Bënjës, also known as the Bënja Thermal Baths, offer a captivating escape into nature's wellness center, tucked away in the lush landscapes of Ogdunan, Albania. These natural hot springs provide a soothing experience amidst the rugged beauty of southern Albania. The thermal waters, with an average temperature of 28-30°C (82-86°F), are rich in minerals and have been used for centuries for their therapeutic properties, attracting visitors seeking relaxation and healing. The baths consist of a series of pools fed by geothermal springs, each said to address different ailments such as rheumatism, skin conditions, and respiratory issues. One pool even contains healing mud. The most iconic feature is the Ottoman-era Kadiut Bridge, constructed in 1760 by Ali Pasha of Tepelenë, which gracefully arches over the pools, framing panoramic views of the Vjosa Valley and the Nemërçka Mountains. While basic spa infrastructure existed here until the 1990s, property disputes led to its disrepair. Today, the open-air pools are maintained by locals. The baths provide an authentic, rustic experience, allowing visitors to connect with the natural environment and local culture. The surrounding landscape offers opportunities for hiking and exploring, with trails providing stunning views of the Vjosa River valley. Visitors can explore the Lengarica Canyon, with some areas having walls up to 100m high and only 20-30m wide. To fully enjoy the experience, it's recommended to visit during late spring or early autumn for pleasant weather. Arriving early is advisable, especially during peak season, to secure a good spot.
