Anastasius Forum: Echoes of Byzantine Durrës

The Anastasius Forum, or Byzantine Forum, stands as a testament to Durrës's long and varied history. Constructed in the late 6th century during the reign of Emperor Anastasius I, who hailed from Durrës, the forum was once the bustling center of the ancient city of Dyrrhachium.Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-grand marketplace and civic space. The forum features a circular paved area, approximately 40 meters in diameter, adorned with Corinthian columns. A podium and a well mark the center of the space. While time has taken its toll, the remaining columns and marble pavements evoke a sense of the forum's original splendor.Located in the heart of modern Durrës, the Anastasius Forum provides a tangible link to the city's Byzantine heritage. It is considered one of the best examples of Late Roman and Early Byzantine monuments in Albania. The forum's design bears resemblance to Constantine's Curved Forum in Constantinople, highlighting the architectural influences of the era.
