Discover more about Casbah of Dellys

The Casbah of Dellys, located in the Boumerdès Province of Algeria, is a captivating historical site that whispers tales of centuries past. Its strategic location on the Mediterranean coast has made it a coveted settlement for various civilizations, each leaving an indelible mark on its character. Originally established as a Phoenician port and later a Roman colony known as Rusuccuru, the city evolved through Andalusian and Ottoman periods. The Casbah, as it stands today, largely reflects its establishment during the Ottoman era in the 16th century. In the 17th century, it expanded to accommodate Muslim families expelled from Andalusia. Unlike the grand palaces found in the Casbah of Algiers, the Casbah of Dellys was primarily built for its citizens. Its layout is divided into upper and lower quarters, separated by a main street constructed by the French in 1844. While some historical structures were lost during the French occupation, such as the Al-'Atiq Mosque, the Al-Islah Mosque was built in a similar Andalusian style as compensation. Today, the Casbah encompasses around 250 historic houses, the Sidi Omar madrasa, and the Mausoleum of Sidi al-Harfi. The Casbah is enclosed by an outer wall. Visitors can explore the narrow, winding streets, admire the traditional Algerian architecture, and discover workshops, galleries, and markets. The Cap Bengut Lighthouse, erected in 1881 in Islamic architectural style, is also a notable sight.
