Timgad, also known as Thamugadi, is a captivating Roman city located in the Aurès Mountains of Algeria. Founded around 100 AD by Emperor Trajan, it stands as one of the best-preserved examples of Roman urban planning. Originally built as a military colony for Roman veterans, Timgad's strategic location controlled key passes through the Aurès Mountains. The city's layout follows a strict grid pattern, bisected by two main streets: the cardo (north-south) and the decumanus (east-west). At the heart of the city lies the forum, the center of political and social life, surrounded by Corinthian columns. Explore the impressive Trajan's Arch, a 12-meter high triumphal arch that marked the city's expansion. Discover the remarkably intact public buildings, including a 3,500-seat theater still used for contemporary productions. Visit the public library, one of the few known Roman libraries, and imagine the thousands of scrolls it once housed. Explore the Great Baths of the North, a vast complex with nearly 40 rooms. The Timgad Museum houses a collection of Roman mosaics and artifacts unearthed at the site. Though sacked by Vandals in the 5th century and later abandoned after the Arab invasion in the 8th century, Timgad's ruins offer a unique insight into Roman life in North Africa. Its well-preserved state has earned it the nickname 'the African Pompeii'.
