Discover more about El Mechouar Mosque

El Mechouar Mosque, an integral part of the Mechouar Citadel in Tlemcen, Algeria, is a historic mosque with immense cultural and historical significance. Founded in 1310 by Abu Hammu I, the mosque has been a center for Islamic intellectual growth in Tlemcen, nurturing generations of scholars and religious leaders.Throughout its history, the mosque has undergone several renovations, notably during the Turkish era. However, a significant transformation occurred in 1840 when the French converted it into a church, stripping its original roof. During the French occupation, Tlemcen became a hub for Christianity, and the mosque was repurposed as a warehouse for a military hospital. Following Algeria's independence, the mosque was restored to its original function, symbolizing the revival of Islamic heritage in the region. The mosque's architecture is notable for its square-shaped minaret, the only part of the original structure that remains intact. The minaret is adorned with Zellige tiles and clays, with the lower part featuring rectangular panels surrounded by Zellige squares with a metallic luster. Unusually, the mosque lacks a traditional Sahn (courtyard). The minaret, standing at 25 meters, is unique in Tlemcen for its elaborate Zellige decoration. The mosque's design reflects a blend of Zianid, Turkish, and subsequent French influences, embodying Tlemcen's complex history.
