Haydon, the First Lady of American Samoa, who in 1970, established a collection of Samoan artifacts. This collection, initially housed in the Governor's Residence, became the foundation for the Museum of American Samoa, which officially opened in 1973. The museum was later renamed in Jean Haydon's honor. The museum is located in Navy Building 43, a structure built in 1917 that formerly served as the U.S. Naval Station Tutuila Commissary and later as the island's post office. The building itself is historically significant, constructed with locally made rusticated concrete blocks. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits featuring traditional Samoan crafts, tools, and household items. Highlights include ancient navigational charts, traditional clothing, and ceremonial items.
