Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, located in the Ariège department of southern France, is a historic site with a poignant past. The castle's origins date back to the Stone Age, with evidence of Roman occupation also found in the area. The Occitan name "Montsegùr" translates to "safe hill," reflecting its strategic importance throughout history. In the 13th century, Montségur became a refuge for the Cathars, a religious group considered heretical by the Catholic Church. The castle was rebuilt in 1204 and became a center of Cathar activity. In 1244, after a long siege, the castle fell to Crusader forces. Approximately 200 Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned alive, marking the end of Catharism in the region. The current fortress was constructed after the fall of the Cathar castrum. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the castle, which include a courtyard and keep. The site offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Pyrenees. A museum in the nearby village of Montségur displays archaeological objects found on the site and provides historical context.
