Discover more about Coma Pedrosa

Coma Pedrosa, meaning "the Pedrosa hill", is the highest peak in Andorra, rising to an elevation of 2,943 meters (9,656 ft). Situated in the northwestern part of the country, bordering France and Spain, it has historically served as a natural barrier. Today, it stands as a symbol of Andorra's stunning landscapes and a popular destination for hikers and climbers. The mountain lies within the Parc Natural Comunal de les Valls del Comapedrosa, established in 2003 to protect 15.42 km² of high-mountain environment. The park boasts diverse habitats, including forests, alpine meadows, rocky slopes and glacial lakes. Visitors can explore a network of trails suitable for various skill levels, from leisurely strolls to challenging ascents to the summit. The most common route to the summit begins in Arinsal, following the well-marked GR 11 trail. The trek typically takes 4 to 4.5 hours to reach the peak. Along the way, hikers pass through forests, alongside cascading rivers, and by mountain lakes such as Estany Negre (Black Lake) and Estany de les Truites (Trout Lake). The final ascent involves navigating rocky terrain, but the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort. From the summit, you can see the surrounding Pyrenees mountains and valleys. Coma Pedrosa's slopes host a variety of flora and fauna, including marmots, vultures, and roe deer. The mountain is covered in snow during the winter, offering opportunities for skiing and mountaineering. The best time to climb Coma Pedrosa is from late May to October, when the weather is favorable and the natural surroundings are vibrant. The first documented ascent of Coma Pedrosa took place on September 22, 1858, by a team marking the border between Spain and Andorra. To commemorate this event, September 22 was declared Comapedrosa Valls Natural Park Day.
