Discover more about Plaza Montenegro

Plaza Montenegro, located in the heart of Rosario, Argentina, offers a tranquil escape from the city's energetic pace. This urban square, bordered by San Luis Street, the pedestrian section of San Martín Street, and Barón de Mauá passage, occupies a portion of a city block, with the Roberto Fontanarrosa Cultural Center (formerly Bernardino Rivadavia Culture Center) taking up most of the space. From the mid-19th century until 1960, the site was a bustling marketplace. However, in 1962, Mayor Cándido Carballo ordered its removal due to sanitary concerns, leading to the demolition of the buildings. The Automóvil Club Argentino then constructed underground parking facilities, while the surface area became a public space known as Plaza Emidgio Pinasco. In 1993, it was rebuilt and renamed Plaza Montenegro, honoring Captain Santiago Montenegro, an early Spanish settler in the area. Today, Plaza Montenegro hosts artisan fairs and provides a space for cultural events. Its central location makes it easily accessible and a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The plaza's hardscape design, a contrast to Rosario's subtropical climate, offers a unique urban aesthetic.
