Discover more about Steam Pump Ranch

Steam Pump Ranch, nestled against the Catalina Mountains in Oro Valley, is a captivating journey into Arizona's past. Founded in 1874 by German immigrant George Pusch and Swiss partner Johann Zellweger, the ranch thrived thanks to its innovative steam-powered water pump, becoming a vital watering station for cattle drives. For 15 cents a head, ranchers could water their cattle, increasing their weight and profit before heading to market. The ranch's name comes from the steam pump, only the second of its kind in the Arizona Territory, which provided essential water to cattle, horses, stagecoaches, and travelers. The original adobe buildings, including the Pusch Family Ranch House (built by 1880) and the Pump House/Blacksmith Shop, still stand as testaments to the ranch's rich history. The Pusch House Museum, open on Saturdays, offers a deeper dive into the ranch's past with knowledgeable docents eager to share stories.Today, Steam Pump Ranch is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and hosts a variety of community events. The Oro Valley Farmers Market sets up every Saturday morning, offering local produce, homemade goods, and a lively atmosphere. Second Saturday events, held from October through April, feature arts and crafts, live music, and prehistoric demonstrations. Friday night concerts are also a regular feature, with food trucks and music on the lawn. The Town of Oro Valley acquired the ranch in 2007 and has done an excellent job preserving its historical significance.
