Discover more about Black Bridge

The Black Bridge, officially the Kaibab Trail Suspension Bridge, is an iconic structure that allows safe passage across the Colorado River within the Grand Canyon. Completed in 1928, the bridge is a critical component of the corridor trail system, linking the North and South Rims via the South and North Kaibab Trails. Before the bridge's construction, crossing the Colorado River was a perilous endeavor. A cableway, operated by David Rust, was the only means for people and mules to cross the river; a harrowing ride in a metal cage suspended from a cable. The Black Bridge revolutionized inner canyon tourism, providing a safe and reliable crossing. The bridge's construction was a feat of engineering, especially considering the remote location and lack of motorized vehicle access. All 122 tons of materials were transported down the steep canyon trails by mules and humans. Notably, 42 Havasupai tribesmen carried the one-ton, 550-foot suspension cables down the trail. The bridge itself is approximately 440 feet long and only 5 feet wide. Today, the Black Bridge continues to serve as a crucial link for hikers and mule trains. It offers breathtaking views of the Colorado River and the surrounding canyon. As one of the few bridges spanning the Colorado River for hundreds of miles, it remains a vital transportation artery for those exploring the depths of the Grand Canyon.
