Discover more about Lost Dutchman State Park

Lost Dutchman State Park, a 320-acre haven in the Sonoran Desert, beckons adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Located about 40 miles east of Phoenix, near Apache Junction, the park's name is derived from the famous Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine, a tale that has captivated imaginations since the mid-1800s. Legend says that the Peralta family discovered a gold mine in the 1840s but were ambushed, and later, Jacob Waltz, a German immigrant known as "the Dutchman," rediscovered it, keeping its location secret. The park's trails offer diverse experiences, from the accessible Native Plant Trail to the challenging Siphon Draw Trail leading to the Flatiron summit. Depending on the season, visitors might witness a vibrant display of desert wildflowers. Wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, javelinas, and various bird species, can also be spotted within the park. Lost Dutchman State Park also provides camping facilities, with 135 campsites available for tents and RVs. For those seeking a more comfortable stay, the park offers five climate-controlled cabins. The park's history dates back to 1972 when the Bureau of Land Management developed it as a day-use recreation area. It was later transferred to the state of Arizona in 1977 and dedicated as Lost Dutchman State Park. Visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the Superstition Mountain Museum and Goldfield Ghost Town, a reconstructed mining town from the late 1800s. However, visitors should be aware of ongoing construction in several areas of the park from April to October 2025, which may cause traffic and noise.
