Discover more about Kinishba Ruins

Kinishba Ruins, also known as Kin Dalhbaa (Brown House) by the Apache, is an archaeological site located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in eastern Arizona. This 600-room pueblo was constructed by the Mogollon people, ancestors of the Zuni and Hopi, between the 12th and 14th centuries. At its peak, Kinishba may have housed up to 1,000 residents within its nine major building mounds. The site features the remains of masonry room blocks, some of which were originally three stories tall. Two large apartment blocks and several smaller buildings surround two communal courtyards, which served as centers for religious ceremonies. The rooms often had a fire pit in the center and averaged 14 by 12 feet. Kinishba was mysteriously abandoned in the late 14th or early 15th centuries, before European contact.Today, the White Mountain Apache Tribe administers the site. Visitors can explore the partially restored ruins and imagine life in this ancient pueblo. To visit Kinishba Ruins, visitors must first check in at the White Mountain Apache Cultural Center and Museum (Nohwike' Bágowa) at Fort Apache.
