    From downtown Tempe, walk to the nearest Valley Metro bus stop. Take Route 72 towards Scottsdale. Ride the bus until you reach the 'Thompson Peak Pkwy & Bell Rd' stop. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk northwest along Thompson Peak Parkway to reach the Gateway Trailhead, which will be on your left. Look for signs leading to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

    If you have access to a bicycle, start from downtown Tempe and head north on Rural Road. Continue north until you reach the intersection with McKellips Road.
