Discover more about Display Springs

Display Springs provides a tranquil spot to witness Hot Springs' thermal waters in their natural state. Located behind the Maurice Bathhouse, next to the balustrade staircase, and beneath the Grand Promenade, these springs were intentionally developed to offer a naturalistic setting where visitors can connect with the park's geothermal features. In the early 1900s, most of the area's thermal springs were covered to protect the water quality, as many depended on them for bathing, drinking and healing. However, in 1931, Display Springs was opened for public viewing, allowing visitors to see the hot springs in their natural state. The water that flows from these springs is not directed to the bathhouses or fountains; instead, it flows into Hot Springs Creek, as all the springs once did. Visitors can observe the unique characteristics of each spring, with the upper spring typically slightly hotter than the lower one. This difference suggests that the cooler lower spring interacts more with non-thermal water as it surfaces. Scientists have determined that it takes over 4,000 years for a single water particle to journey from rainfall to the surface through the area's rock layers. The roughly four dozen springs in the area produce over 700,000 gallons of water a day, with an average temperature of 143 degrees Fahrenheit.
