Discover more about Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center

The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center, located in Piggott, Arkansas, preserves and interprets the connection between Ernest Hemingway and his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer, and her family. The museum includes the Pfeiffer-Janes House and the Hemingway Barn-Studio, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Pauline's parents, Paul and Mary Pfeiffer, were prominent citizens of Northeast Arkansas and owned over 60,000 acres of land. Ernest Hemingway spent considerable time in Piggott between 1927 and 1940 while married to Pauline. During the 1930s, the Pfeiffers converted the barn into a studio to provide Hemingway with a private writing space. It was here that he worked on 'A Farewell to Arms' and several short stories. The museum showcases the Pfeiffer-Janes House and the Hemingway Barn-Studio as they appeared during Hemingway's visits. Many of the furnishings, including Stickley pieces, belonged to the Pfeiffers and were in use when Hemingway stayed in Piggott. The museum also explores the broader context of the 1930s, including world events, agriculture, family lifestyles, and the development of Northeast Arkansas during the Depression and New Deal eras. Visitors can tour the barn and the Pfeiffer family home, viewing exhibits related to Hemingway's time in Piggott. The museum also features a museum store with Hemingway books and related items.
