Karmravor Church, gracefully standing in Ashtarak, is a captivating example of early medieval Armenian ecclesiastical architecture. Constructed in the 7th century, this historic church is also known as the Church of Holy Mother of God. The church derives its name, Karmravor, meaning 'reddish hue' in Armenian, from the unique red tiles that adorn its roof. Remarkably, these are the original tiles, making it the only ancient church in Armenia with its original roof intact.The church's architecture features a cruciform plan with a central dome and a rectangular apse. Measuring only 19 feet 7 inches by 24 feet 6 inches, its small size adds to its charm. The interior is modestly decorated with geometric motifs and foliage. Khachkars (cross-stones), including the famous Tsak-Qar (stone with a hole), surround the church.Legend connects the church to a tale of three sisters who sacrificed themselves for the love of one man, with their dresses inspiring the colors of three nearby churches: Karmravor (red), Tsiranavor (apricot), and Spitakavor (white). The tomb of the renowned Armenian poet Gevorg Emin is located in the churchyard, adding to the site's cultural significance.
