    Discover more about Rotunda

The Elder Park Rotunda, located on the banks of the River Torrens in Adelaide, is a cherished landmark with a rich history. This ornate bandstand was gifted to the city by Sir Thomas Elder, a Scottish-born philanthropist, and officially opened on November 28, 1882. The rotunda was part of a larger plan by the Adelaide City Council to improve the river and its surrounds. Constructed by MacFarlane's Saracen Foundry in Glasgow, the octagonal rotunda is made of decorative wrought iron with a zinc roof. It was shipped from London and assembled on-site by Charles Farr, who raised the floor to enhance its visibility from King William Road. The structure is elevated on a mound with granite steps, with a 5.5-meter deep foundation that once housed musical equipment and provided practice space for bands. Throughout its history, the Elder Park Rotunda has been a hub for community events and musical performances. In its early years, it attracted crowds of thousands for weekly concerts. The rotunda continues to host various events, showcasing local talent and fostering cultural engagement. Today, visitors can admire its intricate design, relax in the surrounding gardens, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Elder Park.
