To reach Big Red Sand Dune by car, start from Brisbane. Take the M1 highway heading north towards Gympie. Continue following the signs for the Bruce Highway (A1) until you reach the town of Rockhampton. From Rockhampton, take the Capricornia Highway (A49) to the town of Longreach. From Longreach, follow the signs to Winton and then onto the Diamantina Developmental Road (Boulia Road). Continue along the Boulia Road until you reach Birdsville. Once in Birdsville, follow the signs to the QAA Line (Simpson Desert Road), where Big Red Sand Dune is located. The total driving distance is approximately 1,600 km and may take around 18 hours, so plan for an overnight stop along the way.
