Discover more about Burgruine Landsee

Burgruine Landsee, nestled in the heart of Burgenland, Austria, is a captivating relic of medieval history and one of the largest castle ruins in Central Europe. The castle's origins are currently untraceable, but it was first mentioned in 1158. Perched on a rocky outcrop in Landseer Berge Nature Park, the ruins offer visitors a unique blend of historical exploration and natural beauty. Originally known as 'Lánzsér' during its time in Hungary, the castle's name reflects its strategic importance. Throughout the centuries, Burgruine Landsee has witnessed numerous changes in ownership, including a period under Hungarian control in 1222. In the 16th century, the castle was owned by Gertrud von Weißpriach, who was known for her violence. In 1612, it came into the possession of the Esterházy family, who completed the castle in 1666. A major fire in 1772 led to the castle's devastation. Today, visitors can explore the extensive grounds, walk through the well-preserved entrance gate, cross bridges and courtyards, and ascend to the 'Don Jon,' the impressive keep. From the keep's observation platform, enjoy panoramic views of Mittelburgenland and the Bucklige Welt. The castle also features a modern yet rustic observation tower that allows for breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area, including Lake Neusiedl and Lake Balaton on clear days. The site is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM.
